The madness continues.. Mission To Moonshine

I was jogging around Bank in London today - so routed myself past the Royal Exchange at about 6 and again about 7. Snapped this pick of the moonswatch car.

Wow the Moonswatch queues were insane!. Split in to a number of different lines with hundreds of people.

The people getting them had the distinct look of scalpers (and scalpers that had been there all day - tired faces, blankets, long coats.)

On the one hand - it’s a real shame Swatch handled it this way - virtually none of these watches will get in to enthusiasts hands at RRP. (Imagine if - say - instead of spending money on these events, Swatch spent it reaching out to consumers who had consistently been showing their moonswatches in use on social media and offered them codes to buy the moonshine one..)

.. on the other hand. Well - queuing up all day in the bitter cold for the sake of a gold plated hand (as an enthusiast would be doing) is completely insane. But queuing up all day in the bitter cold to make £100s (as scalpers do) actually makes sense.

What am I saying? Don’t hate the scalpers - feel disappointed at Swatch for knowingly doing it this way..

I make my own moonshine and gold is not in there anywhere. You need a lot of moonshine to want that thing.

·

It’s like swatch is doing this intentionally for scalpers and rich people rather than Watch enthusiasts

Ugh.... I just don't get this hype

90% of them will be flippers 😅

Just endlessly amusing the reactions to this thoroughly below average watch.

Madness! These have been around now for months with pushers falling off, straps falling apart and wearers getting rashes and dyed skin? Isn't it just a cheap plastic watch with Omega written on it?

Each to their own! Good luck to those queuing!!

·

I kind of wish it was an all gold plastic (Casio looking) MoonSwatch. That would have been more interesting than a golden seconds hand.

I’ve got no issue with the thing. Rather like the OG ones and a gold hand for a few more £ - fine. But the way it’s been handled does sort of show up that Swatch have always been cool with the worst excesses of the hype (scalpers, inflated prices etc.)

·

Yep, already on ebay for at least £1499. Someone will buy it.

·

Yeah just what I was going to say the usual money grabbing scum are trying to cash in already but if people just stop buying from the grey market these people will be left with watches they don't want .plus the watches are not well made and are not even worth the £200 plus from Swatch better chronograph watches available for similar prices like the awesome seagull 1963

·

Can you imagine when Rolex executives get together with Swatch executives and they can't stop laughing about how they have screwed the consumers?

Image

It's amazing to live in an era where, so long as you tell someone that something is limited and hardly anyone else can have one, they will pay whatever it takes to have one, even if it's a piece of crap that's worth nothing like what they're paying. The Moonswatch - in any version - is the poster child for that.

(So are NFTs now I think of it, but that's a whole other rabbit hole to go down...)

Quite extraordinary. It's the whole reason why Swatch didn't use its might to just churn out a million of each upfront and put them online. It wouldn't create the same FOMO, in people who pre-disposed to FOMO.

And if you feel 'seen' by that comment, don't blame me. Change your mindset.

Surely one from that crowd probably put it up for sale in chrono24 already

Yeah, I don't get it. Not the hype nor the scalping pricing. I mean what is next a titanium (looking) second hand. For valentine 2024 a ruby colored dial.

Wait, must stop giving them ideas.. 😄

Every time I see people talking about it, it makes me want to buy the Pagani 1701. They must be doing gangbusters off the back of this.

In fact, I have already bought my wife a yellow Sekonda after originally thinking ‘ooh, a yellow Moonswatch…’ then seeing the price for the quality. It’s made me appreciate affordable quartz chronos, which the Moonswatch decidedly isn’t. I don’t care if the Alpha & Omega had signed the dial one lone Sunday in February.

Next month? I'd be disappointed with AliExpress if it takes them more than a week.

It happened about a year or so ahead of time…

Next month…gold second hands will be available on AliExpress for $8.50.

more like next week haha

Yes I couldn't agree more! The moonswatch was never really for me but I was vaguely interested when it came out. Then I heard all the horror stories. Then I handled one in rhe flesh( a friend had bought one and was sadly suffering buyers regret). It certainly makes you see the quality that some other brands offer for the same or less!

Well, that's a moonwatch clomage. I reckon Swatch saw this, and it gave them the idea. You also can get Moonswatch fakes on Aliexpress, and even those may actually be better quality than original moonswatches. I haven't seen a moonshine fake yet, but the last time I looked was yesterday...

All I am saying is, we had a Not-Quite-No-Time-To-Die’s in stainless steel, and now we have a Bond 60th in stainless steel… a bunch of non-trad colours on the 1701, and then the Moonswatch… am starting to wonder if some of the clomage are just R&D and focus grouping in disguise. XD (Not a serious suggestion folks)

I have to ask… how much does bioceramic feel like plastic? Because I like the idea of bioceramic, but if it’s just ABS or worse then I don’t see much of the point in it.

·

Oh man. I recommended all of the wc member to bought this moonshine

To me it just felt like plastic. There is no other way to dress it up. It just felt like plastic and therefore not expensive. If it was a twenty five quid casio then fair enough but it just feels like plastic.

Apologies to all those who have bought and love them.

·

Cant wait to get a mission to The sun with a yellow dial and have everyone go crazy again

The same. I think bio ceramic is a fancy name for plastic.

·

Long lines, create a frenzy, fomo? I think that’s the point, not much interest in Swatch these days, so make a plastic, ahem.. bio ceramic copy of the iconic speedmaster and you get people waiting in line for a Swatch.

Swatches are fun, playful watches whose best days are far behind them. But they are the reason the Hayek family and the Swatch Group are the horologic behemoths they are today. So if they want to make a plastic, I mean bio ceramic copy of an iconic watch from a brand they own, who are we to criticize. To be honest I’d like to see a bio ceramic Fifty Fathoms or a Breguet Tradition.

Everyone is have trouble meeting demand. Those Omega Seamaster AT 38/34mm with those cool new dial colors still aren’t at ADs. I don’t see people complaining about Traska and many other micro brands “coming soon” inventory.

·

When the original was launched I was going to get one (mission to Mars) after buying into the whole excitement of the event. Luckily, it was impossible to get and after it transpired it was an overpriced junk watch I felt I had a lucky escape. It’s certainly raised a great deal of publicity for Swatch and Omega and that continues with this release. I now get my pleasure in continuing to not want, let alone purchase one. Good luck to all the flippers queuing in the cold and my sympathy to anyone that wants to waste their money on buying one from a third party or at retail.

·

Surely not a flipper- only hardcore watch collectors have this ‘do 😉
