Grand Seiko Quartz, Spring Drive or High Beat Mechanical?

Grand Seiko have a great movement in the mechanical and quartz spaces. Then they invented a space all of their own with spring drive. So all things considered - what is your choice?

·

Personally - I’ve never owned the mechanical. But between spring drive and quartz I choose the quartz. Choice based on pricing - and immediate pick up and go nature of the watch. it just clicked with me in a way the spring drive didn’t (even though it was gorgeous and the sweep is great.)

·

Why choose when you can have all 3 - all of them very relevant in their field. But if you make me choose, I will go for Spring drive as it is their « blue ocean » story.

·

I voted spring drive because that is the best horological feat of a movement, but I personally have the SBGW287 Boshū which is a manual wound 9S64 movement.

All great movements, but if you only have one, get the one that is only available from GS. You can pick up a Longines HAQ or a Zenith high beat, but you can’t get a Spring Drive from any other brand.

I can have all three?  You must know something about my bank account that I don’t know.

Price does tie in to the wider relationship though.. On the SBGX261 - the price, the size, the satin finish on the bracelet. That all ties together to make a watch one puts on time and time again. My spring drive was just that bit more expensive / precious.

The spring drive has been in my radar for the longest time.

·

Good question. I’m very tempted by the SBGW231 with manual movement but i’m hesitant for that reason. Feels like somehow if I get a GS it should be a Spring Drive, a High Beat or a Quartz. But not their entry level mechanical movement

Great watch! Are you happy with the mouvement so far?

I absolutely love it! I wear a different watch each day (6 watch collection) so I wear it once a week (on Fridays).  The movement is great for a standard manual wound!

·

Sure I’m just talking about the two GS I have had on my wrist. The spring drive was a bit big and a bit too pristine for me to always grab. For someone else a different choice would be just as valid.

Beautiful 😍 🫠

I would like a Spring Drive at some point, but damn it GS, why do you make it so hard to save for that, offering watches like these?

Two down, one to go!

I think the best value for money spring drive is the skyflake. Gorgeous dial and only 5.8K.

Personally i would have spring drive, because it's a grand Seiko thing. But my grail watch is actually a grand Seiko Automatic.
