What do you enjoy most about this hobby?

I'm starting to ask myself what I really want out of this hobby. Is it just a hobby or is there more... I'm considering, like many, finding a way of making it a part of my livelihood. I've done that in the past with other passions but my relationship to the hobby ended up changing dramatically–and not always for the better.

I answered C at first and then I thought about . . .no, I'm not here for you haha . . .I'm here for your watches (B). Honestly, some of us would likely be at each other's throats in real life, which is why I just want things to be about this weird little hobby of ours.

This is kind of like how I know the names of dogs in the neighborhood and not so much their owners . . . and then their owner tries to strike up a conversation while I'm petting their dog and I'm thinking "this wasn't part of the deal!" 😂

A little of each but mainly the exploring and learning.

·

I like wearing watches.

·

I use my g shocks to help take off small mental burdens, ( alarms of when to be some where, stay on track with the hourly chime, stop watch for personal competition.... Ect)

·

I do enjoy researching and purchasing a new watch, but my favorite aspect is the wearing experience. There's nothing better than a long, happy honeymoon with a watch that surpassed expectations on unboxing.

I was at a party last night and all I wanted to do was go up to people wearing watches and compliment them (and hope they were a geek like me haha). I love wearing my watches but I also like meeting others who enjoy them–or at least they made an intentional decision to not wear their Apple Watch that day.

·

Indeed. However its does seem we all share different levels of itchiness at different moments. I'm not much of an impulsive buyer BUT yesterday I bought a Grand Seiko out of nowhere!! Total impulse buy but damn am I excited to wear that one this summer.

Nice. I use my G-shock for timing things when I'm cooking.

Oh man this is a good one. The honeymoon is awesome and the other side of that coin has had me catching and releasing a few as well. I held on to my Nomos for much longer than I should have simply because I was trying to force myself to love it–when in reality–I just liked it a little...

I cannot say I have a favorite brand to have learned about but I do have a category, that being American made watch brands.

·

Probably a subcategory of (B), but in addition to the general enjoyment of wearing the danged things, I want to call out the very specific pleasure of looking at my watch box. It sits currently on a little cabinet just inside the door to my home office, so I pass it many times every day, and every time I glance down through the glass top, I get a sharp little thrill from seeing that glittering display of colors and textures. Kind of a pirate's treasure chest for my inner 8 year-old or something.

I feel like we need a pet thread. I can get behind some wrist shots in front of your pets . . . def. beats wrist shots in front of a steering wheel.

Ahhh, you're the guy that has an RGM on order, right? Gotta visit that shop the next time I visit the in-laws who are 20 min away.

For me A + B would be the answers

·

A and B

·

B for me. Learning what's coming out, from who, and the background to the design is exciting.

·

I just love the flex culture and waitlists. I love waiting for a watch that they don’t want to sell me!

·

I picked A and C. I love seeing everyone’s creativity and appreciation for their watches. But I also want to discover more watches to consider in my collection. Some say it doesn’t exist, but do believe that my grail watch is gonna be in my possession someday.

·

I build stuff and to build the best, least expensive watch i can. Plus i like pretty things that are not expensive.

Funny you mention grails because I agree with Adrian from Bark&Jack in that a grail isn't the end all be all of your watch journey; it usually is just a stepping stone to more watches lol!! The more we learn about and get to own watches the more we want to learn about and get to own more watches!!

Same! I'm on 5 waiting lists for my Rolex and can't wait to not get the call!!

·

How about D, all the above ☝️

·

Do you have any pocket watches?

·

Nice. I ask because I just got one off of eBay that is 97 years old and is still ticking! Pretty cool to see it alive and well nearly a century later!

·

Owning excellent watches!

Finding them is a pain in the ass AND most great looking watches are silly expensive... It should be a lot easier to find them (the search system in Amazon is for example horrible, with tons of completely wrong results) and there should be a lot more excellent affordable alternatives!!

I've come across a lot of videos on YouTube like this that approach this exact topic.

I saw that discussion. Grail is more of a threshold of what you can try to acquire further. But they’re right. There’s always something!
