36mm suggestions

I came very close to getting an Adventurine Smiths Everest on eBay today, but the seller contacted me before he shipped it saying that it would no longer wind.

I've been looking at Lorier, Vaer, and Traska... But truly lusting after a BB36.  I am a young parent and a school teacher, so a 3,000 dollar watch isn't really in the cards. I guess my question is, do y'all know of a 36mm watch under 1000 dollars that wears small and has a gorgeous black dial???

If I may be so bold as to offer a take from out of left field...

  • Smiths is nothing more than a brand that died out and then got resurrected by a cantankerous a$$hat, who is famous for his world-leading horrifyingly bad customer service, looking to cash in on the brand's famous heritage
  • Given that insight, what it should tell you is that "heritage" ain't heritage.  And if "heritage" ain't heritage, maybe heritage just doesn't matter.  And if heritage doesn't matter, you can get the world's coolest made-to-order, one-of-a-kind watch, spec'ed to your precise needs and desires, for well under $1,000!!!
  • There are TONS of folks who do modding, who can create an amazing piece for you, 36mm, black dial, explorer case, handset that matches your wants, etc., etc., etc., and you could probably get it all for under $500!

I wanted a pilot's watch, but didn't want to pay $15k for a Moser Heritage Centre Seconds.  Got this one made for me, and it cost something like $400 all in?

I wanted a custom watch with a hilarious dial, and got this, and I think it was like $350 all in?

There are lots of folks here on WC who do mods.  Why not give it a try and get yourself something unique?

Marc at Long Island Watch just released a new 36mm Islander today that's basically an Explorer clone and is under $300. Another possibility to add to the list.

Christopher Ward C63 Sealander 36mm. This gives me a similar feeling to the Tudor.

On AliExpress, there is the Explorer homage by Pagani for £189. They also make a BB homage but that's too big.

Besides that, there are quite a few vintage military style watches, e.g. by Baltany, Tandorio and KEAOIRUS.

Glycine combat36 is nice, Armida has a few 36mm with dial choices, Alpha Europe has 36mm available.

Christopher Ward 36mm All the way IMO

Can I DM you? I have questions about a possible build or just go with Marc’s company.

Yobokies is the way to go personally. You can custom build your watch on the website by emailing the webmaster.

Hey man, yeah, of course you can DM me!  Ha!

The Islander Manhassets look quite good for the price.  Its pretty much a bog standard explorer homage but the handset is improved and the colors are definitely fun.

Difficult....ah

Junghans Max Bill Handaufzug 34mm but wears like a 36

Lorier is, allegedly, releasing a new version of their Falcon in 36mm sometime this month after having some issues. They look great and are going to cost $500. Check out their site for details but I think it might be what you’re looking for.

If you are listing after a BB36, keep saving and never settle for something less than what you want. Shop the used market, can find one for under 2K easily. I love my bb36

I see that you also have the Traska Summiteer.  Which one gets more wrist time?

That's a tough one. Definitely two of my favorites and you couldn't go wrong with either. I will say that the San Martin has better fit and finish than the Traska. The Traska probably is more "respected" in the watch community as a brand but honestly Traska is likely also made in Asia. I haven't had to use customer service for either so I can't speak to that.  The Traska is a more original design if that matters to you.  Traska is also harder to get and probably  seems more exclusive.  I don't know that I could choose one or say I like one better than the other.  Does one speak more to you than the other?
