Y'all be careful out there with your Rolex

Yes, one must be aware of his/her surroundings and not just flash one's watches, and other such trinkets, around.  This isn't an overly new concept.  I'm pretty lucky to live and especially work in an area that's particularly safe, but when I go to Salt Lake City, I wear my lesser expensive watches.  I broke the rule once, when I went to The Theater.  We were around tons of dressed up people and hardly stood out.  Plus, I wore a long sleeve shirt.

From what I'm gathering, they are targeting specifically people who are wearing Rolex. I guess some scumbag figured out what they are worth and told all the other jackasses, so now it's a thing.

·

there are a ton of YouTube videos on Rolex robberies. Even producer Michael stopped wearing his watches on the streets of California.

I wear at the maximum a ~$1k seiko out and about..   I live North of Los Angles... I might just wear my gshock (if appropriate) if I needed to go into LA for whatever reason (I basically never go to los angles ever at this point.)   Last time I went to Staples Center couldn't even walk on the sidewalk for all the homeless tents in the way... it was very unpleasant..   I basically stay out here north of LA County ..it isn't too bad here (yet?)....    I don't think I would wear this watch if going to LA for some reason (it would have to be a good reason honestly... real good).       I am very actively attempting to sort out relocating out of here (back home.... I am not from California, my wife is from here and she talked me into moving here, I am happy to be with my wife but I really do not want to stay in CA at all at this point.

in fairness I would probably be ~ok with this watch..but why risk it..

Awww, poor rich people who have to worry about their five-figure watches.  Life just isn't fair, is it?

Well, I don't have that problem personally, and I don't particularly have any love (or hate) for rich people in general. But I don't think being robbed at gunpoint and pistol whipped is fair or just for anybody and I don't think there is a place for that type of behavior in a civilized society. So if you are implying that rich people should get mugged and beaten because they are wearing a Rolex, I disagree with you.

·

Nah, I'm not implying that at all.  Please don't put words in my mouth.

I don't think anyone deserves to get mugged or beaten for wearing a watch, but I can say with certainty that I do not feel bad for people who can afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a watch should they get mugged for it.  Those are literally the last people I'm going to feel bad for.

Not to mention, anyone spending that much money on a watch is insured, so they'll be just fine.

And should this cause people to have to think twice about putting on a watch worth tens of thousands of dollars before they go out in public, well, I don't feel bad about that either.

As unpleasant as I'm sure it is to not be able to walk on the sidewalk because of homeless tents on your way to and from a sporting arena, it's possible things might even be more unpleasant for the people who have to live in those tents.

It's funny you say don't put words in my mouth, then you pretty much say the same thing. Well, not that they should, just that you don't feel bad at all if they do. And it's sad that anyone thinks it's no big deal if it happens if they are rich.  It's a pretty traumatic experience.  Often painful. But they're rich, so no biggy?  Awesome.

No.  I didn't say the same thing.  There's a clear distinction to be made between condoning the actions and not feeling bad for the people they happened to.  Forgive me if I'm not impressed with your bougie moralizing.  As much as it may be traumatizing for rich people to have their (most likely insured) expensive jewelry taken from them, do you have any consideration for the trauma that people who have to resort to stealing rich people's jewelry have been through?  Or do you only feel bad for the rich?

You assume people who steal have to steal.

·

I don't assume that.  I'm not even sure how you reached the conclusion that I do.  I am willing to bet that by and large, people who mug people on the street for watches haven't led the most privileged lives.  Do you assume otherwise?

I agree with you. They most likely have not led privileged lives. Pure speculation, but I also think they have not have made good life decisions. Furthermore, I suspect that if they were successful at heisting that Rolex and were successful at hawking it at a profit, they still won't be happy or make any better life decisions.  The only difference between where we once were and where we are now is most people used to think this type of behavior was not ok.

·

I'm not going to dignify your speculation with a response, nor am I about to speculate as to what you mean by "good life decisions".  As for your claim regarding what most people think is ok or not ok, how do you know?  Can you read minds?  Are you actually purporting to have the ability to speak intelligently about what most people think?
