What do you do with watches that don't sell?

I've got 2 watches that I've been trying, admittedly not very hard, to sell. I've come to the conclusion that in order to sell them, I'd have to drop the price to so little it's just not worth the time or effort. I'd imagine some of you guys have similar watches. So what do you do with them?

Give them away as gifts…

·

I have a giant zip lock bag full of watches that I cant sell and may or may not work.  Some are fairly decent but not worth the effort of making a listing.

·

I have two methods of dealing with such watches:

1 - Gifts to family & Friends

2 - Drawer of shame - really nasty watches that I know no-one would want. Some are stripped of their straps/bracelets/parts and re-purposed.

I don't throw watches away because you never know when a part might become useful.

·

Not at that stage as of yet in watch collecting, sorry.

·

I always price watches low because I don't own patience 🥲 Some have been slow still ,but they always sell.

·

Could always donate them to the MinnKonaMike fund!! He's cool and well worth it😉

Yes, I've hear good things about this very serious and respectable foundation!!

Thrift store

·

I would try to give away or give a huge discount to someone else I know

Or another option is to trade with something else - if that person wants the watch, they will perceive the watch with full value there

·

Repurpose them into an art project, or build them into an interesting desk clock or pendant or something.

·

Everyone here wants to know what are those 2 watches, that don't sell. Am I right?

·

I will typically just drop the price or sell to someone that can use it at a ridiculous low price. I rather have a little money for them than none as I can always put that money towards ..... beer. lol

·

I wonder if we are allowed to do a buy/sell/trade thread on here with random cheap watches that we cant sell.  I have a cool Timex electric, ladies Heuer diver, Bulova that needs some love, etc etc.

·

I am interested in any watch that needs a new home. I love to tinker and have a nice setup at home for basic watchmaking.

message me if you are so inclined!

There is nothing in TOS that says we cannot do this.

I just hope we don't get swamped with a bunch of "In Search Of" posts/comments.

Ditto. Usually when I decide to sell a watch it's because I need the funds for another one that I really want. I'd rather price low and get a quick sale then to try to get what I think I "should" get. Since I've adopted this route, selling watches has been so much easier.

I've come to learn this over 15 years. Sure, I take a bath in the "resale value" but I just consider that part of the cost of the hobby. There are many other hobbies that are far more expensive.

So, say I buy a Seiko for $400, wear it for 2 years, then sell it for $250. Ok, so worst case scenario I've paid $150 to try out a watch that I really liked for 2 years, and still got SOME money back to put toward another. It's kind of like buying a car and trading it in every 5 years or so. Sure, you don't own it for life (cheapest way) but you're also not just leasing it (most expensive way).

I usually start at half msrp. A little less if there is something to critique or a little more if it's a more hard to find piece an so on. G-Shocks er terrible at keeping value. There you usually start at third of the msrp an yet not getting any response...

There should be a own part of the forum in that case!! Buying and selling that is, but honestly I hope it won't be a thing..

My problem with the buy/sell page as part of WC is that there are already SO many outlets to sell watches - many forums (most of which are picked up and aggregated by watchrecon.com), eBay, reddit, etc...do we NEED another place to sell watches?

I don't think not having enough places to sell them is the issue.

I also like, as someone else has stated, that WC doesn't have a sell page, and that people are just here to talk and not to sell.

·

My probably not worth selling, but can't bring myself to toss out, watches go with a couple old broken ones that live a the drawer of shame.

I think from a trust perspective WC is pretty powerful.  I've honestly felt no compunctions about sending a watch for sale here versus reddit where I'm constantly worried about something going wrong.  It's made it easy to put watches up for charitable auction here and to bid with confidence.  @HotWatchChick69 , @Deeperblue , @rowiphi, and @JackieMoon_LMS could specifically comment on their experiences on the charitable auctions both from the seller and buyer perspective.

As for the original post....just lower the prices until you get a taker or the cost of selling is too high.  You can always sell something if you're motivated enough.  You just have to abandon the idea that other folks value it in the same way you do.

·

That's how it goes. You want to sell it for a reason. Probably some people get why you are selling and doubt because of that.

Somehow we don't sell often watches which are wanted. :)

·

I'm in the same boat with a Seiko mod I've listed, but not tried hard to sell.

I'm debating disassembling and selling the parts individually, but idk if that would be ultimately beneficial

·

I’d don’t sell often and if I do but no one wants them…. I wear them

·

Try taking nice pictures, just as if you were taking the photos for Instagram, nice pictures are like magnets for potential buyers!

I’m totally down with that idea. I’ve got a G-Shock Bluetooth brand new, a Vostok modded diver, Seiko 5 Sportsmatic, 2 x 38mm ish Casio dress/ casual quartz watches I’d happily give away. I’ve also got probably 3 or 4 more expensive ones I’m going to sell on, like my CW Sealander and my Sinn 556 B. I would rather sell them here to people that want them and not feed the eBay machine by paying their ridiculous fees.

I agree, I think the trust part is important here. In a way, you're selling the watch to someone you already have a connection with.

·

If I think the watch is presentable if just not for me, I list on eBay with 12 decent photos and a proper description

they always sell, even if it takes a few months, I take the “one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure” view.

Any  real crappy ones I’ve probably bought out of curiosity I tinker with and keep the bits. Makes you appreciate the watch makers art, and the skill involved and the knowledge saves you a few quid.

·

The value of a watch is what someone will pay, not what the seller wants. On a few occasions I have managed to sell watches for a value higher than my expectations, but the majority of the time I get less. You have two options

  1. Sell it for a price that someone will pay
  2. Keep it and enjoy it

Sell? what's that?.....  😀
