What watch caused the light to fade from your eyes?

I really wanted to like the Tissot PRX in person. I loved the blue quartz on a leather strap, and when I went to try it on in the store...I felt nothing. Just massive disappointment. The second hand never aligned with the markers. The strap, and bracelet felt cheap, and for whatever reason the shape of the case wasn't doing me any favors.

I haven’t seen the quartz in person, but I’ll say I completely love the auto. Sure, that wasn’t your question, but I felt the need to defend a watch I like a lot.

The “boring” side, which still looks pretty great.

Another watch I haven’t seen in person is the Vario reverse-thingy watch. The pictures look fantastic, and I was about to put down a deposit when I finally saw a side shot. Imagine my shock, nay my horror at its thickness. I didn’t end up getting it, I don’t regret that choice, and I’m still sad about it.

Whereas the thickness…not as much.

The automatic version had a lot of texture the dial, but wasn't as lustrous as the quartz version. I'm still sad about the PRX as I wanted a nice quartz in my collection. I think I'll look into a Vaer.

I have a Vaer auto, and think it’s great for whatever that might be worth.

Agree. A quartz watch should not be the thickness of a Goldenberg Peanut Chew.

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch caliber 1861.

The Speedy Pro is one of those watches that everyone says you have to try and to own if you're a watch guy.  Its like a freaking rite of passage and I LOVE chronographs.

Tried it on and felt nothing but disdain.

Hated the bracelet.  Hated the manual winding.  Hated the lyre lugs (surprising because I like them on most of Omegas other models).  Hated the clasp.  Hated the sizing.

At the end of the day, it felt like just another black and white watch with a too busy dial.

I've always taken this as the best evidence possible that I'm just a bad collector.

I feel the same issues about the Speedy. One of the most grossly overrated watches in my opinion. I still haven't fallen in love with any Rolex besides the Explorer 1, and that was a watch that just a few years ago, I couldn't stand.

For me it was the Seiko "DressKX" on bracelet... so I replaced the bracelet with a Strapcode one, and found that I now loved the bracelet, just not the watch. I loved how it looked, but the watch itself just never sat right on my wrist, and felt like a shallow-based bowl about to rock over.

I ended up selling the combo to a brand new watch collector who  loved it at first sight, so I feel good about that.

·

Its an entry level swiss watch so it will not light a fire like some of their pricier models. It rocks a $30.00 movement in a boring case and is simple but reliable. A good life lesson is to love what you have and tailor your expectations to her /it faults and features.

You just described the exact reaction I have whenever I see a Tissot display. The feeling of being underwhelmed by their watches in person is something I grew familiar with and the PRX wasn't any different in this regard: Bland, large, second's hand ticking all over the dial, meh.

·

I felt the same way when I tried it on too . I thought damn …. Instead I got the Seiko Titanium. That watch is a revelation….

Another vote for Vaer.  I got their 36 mm Korean War tribute watch, and it's the only 36 mm that I've felt really belonged on my wrist and felt great! I also have their retro chonograph, and with that metal bracelet, it looks fantastic.  Love the look.  Check out my latest WRUW shot.

I went to Macy's to try it on as well.  Both the quartz and auto version.  The quartz versions I checked never hit their seconds marks.  Why on why?  When Casio and Citizen do it all the time! And the mechanical version was cool, but the build quality felt really cheap.  Now, I'm searching for another integrated bracelet.  Heck, I've been checking Aliexpress for Chinese homages.  Nothing so far.

Saw the Sternglas Naos on Ben's YT channel, thought it looked cool, went to try it on (easy, as Sternglas is from my hometown Hamburg). But, although it's quite a decent ticker for the money, it just didn't look right on me. Too dressy, too small. That day I learned to always tryb4ubuy, and look in a big mirror.

Navitimer 41 in Green (3 hand version). I so loved the pictures of this watch, and of course the Navitimer heritage, but saw it at the AD and thought 'meh'

Probably the Bulova Lunar Pilot. Fun backstory, nice looking watch. But on the wrist - even my enormous wrist - it just feels all wrong. No wonder they're making a smaller version of it for release mid-next year. I'm going to sell mine, actually. I just can't get into it.

·

Rather than a specific brand or watch it is usually me loving a watch in photos and then finding its too large for my wrist that then makes the light fade from my eyes!

·

I was all set to buy the Tudor Boutique Bronze Edition and loved it and even put it out here for opinions.  I held off for a week, but the more I looked at the snowflake hand the more I realized how much I hate it.  Now Tudor models turn me off.

·

The Grand Seiko Shunbun. I obsessed over that watch for several months. Saved up enough to buy it. Went to GS boutiques just to admire it through the case.

Two weeks ago I tried it on and.... I guess I'm just not a titanium guy. The watch was too light, and it made it feel... cheap? I know I'm not making much sense but this hobby rarely ever makes sense anyway.

·

@doodybadoody I had the same with the GS quartz GMT. Saved up and went up to buy it from the boutique but I didn't feel anything when I put it on! Went next door, tried on the Black Bay 58 Steel and Gold on leather strap and it was love at first sight. Still love it every time I look at it, so no regrets.

That love-at-first-sight/wear feeling is so important imo. Yes, for more expensive timepieces most people should take their time before buying. But if that initial "hook" isn't there then it's probably not the one for you.

For me was the Certina DS PH200, the very first model.

Really loved their rendition but when I tried it on, felt too light, too big and the bezel felt unimpressive.

Still today I think it was my own inflated expectations that shaped that impression, but I’m still to give it another go. I still like that design a lot.

·

I know that it's nothing to worry about because it's cheap but I tried on and didn't like at all the CASIO A168w. I just can't understand all the praise and fuss. This is coming from a Casio freak.

The "tiffany dial" Rolex Oyster Perpetual

The color just bores me in person
