Are perpetual calendars dress watches, or complicated tool watches?

My brain hurts trying to think about this question, but I figured I would have you all commiserate with me. I see these pieces as serving a specific purpose without actually being super useful to anyone.

The difference between perpetual calendar watches and dive watches is that the dive watch was built to meet a very specific real-world need, a perpetual calendar is built to prove that a company can do it and to show off how pretty it looks. That difference in purpose is what makes the perpetual calendar a dress watch in my mind.

I definitely see your point.

I think it’s a dress tool watch.

In my option it has be be tough to be a tool watch.

So definitely dress. Most mechanicals aren't good with shocks.

Unless it's both then it's a tool watch.

In my opinion they are neither. Too delicate to be a tool watch, too complicated and often too large to replace the classic small 2 hand dress watch.

They are serving the same purpose that chronos did: Look at my wrist and despair, for it's complicated beyond measure and unlike me you will never be able to afford one.

You know how the poem ends ... 😊

Normally they are dress. But the IWC Big Pilot perpetual calendar is a tool watch.

You're mixing categories. A perpetual calendar is a complication that can in theory go in a watch of any type. I suppose they tend to go into dress watches, because if you're going to spend that kind of money, you want it in something fancy to show it off.  However, this is no dress watch; it's supposed to be, or at least look like, a tool watch. Would you wear as one? That's a different question.

Yes, but personally I don't plan to face plant in a sand dune.
