So a new watch is a pain to wear...

...when you spent real money on it and don't want it to get damaged.

seems to me one of the hardest things to get over is that watches are not baseball cards or comics - their condition is not as important when reselling and what's more they can be fixed for the most part with servicing.

My new rolex has been sitting in a box for the past 3 months. I'm annoyed that I can't bring myself to even wear it

You can send it to me to wear for a month or so. I'll put some minor scratches in it (break it in if you will) and return it so you can enjoy your watch. ;)

·

What!! Ok get this…

Boom! Problem solved!! Actually I saw in Instagram that they put actual 3m plastic coating on the bracelets to be scratch proof…

I was thinking one of those inflatable arm floaters you put on children so they cant drown.

just wrap one of those around the watch and youre covered

I feel you, man. I have my new omega speedmaster, and the one time I took it took work, I brought it in a watch travel case... So, that was weird.

·

Do they make masks for Rolex maybe?

·

Wear it.  My bb58 is getting beat up and it makes me enjoy it more.

·

Oh no! Don’t have to beat it up, but gotta wear that baby.

Wear it doing life things. In boats we call those "gold Keys" never touches the water for risk of damage and only collects birthdays. Respect what you have but don't be afraid of using it. Life happens...go with it.

·

Same with a new car. Just jump right in...

Sometimes you just need to force yourself.

When I used to ski, there were people who would buy fancy new skis and never use them for fear that they would get beat up.  Your Rolex will outlive you, you're unlikely to damage it in some irreparable way (within the boundaries of normal usage).  Put it on.

That said, I had has a surfing wipeout that stopped my SeaDweller, but it dang near stopped me too, so I didn't notice for a while.  No cosmetic damage to either one, though.

·

I've been wearing my Black Bay GMT on and off for a while now because I didn't want to "damage it".  You know what?  I've worn it, and it now has some scratches and a ding.  So be it.  I bought it to wear, and I've enjoyed wearing it.  It's going to get scratched and marked up.  I've learned to be OK with it.  It just evidence that you're enjoying it and making use of it.  When's the last time someone said - "Hey great watch!  DAMN!  That's a big ol' scratch!"?

Life is short.  Enjoy your watch.

·

So what Rolex is it? Maybe if it’s a vintage gold day date or rare double red, that’s wise. If it’s a current stainless steel sports model bought at retail, wear the hell out of it! Or be Captain Sensible and wear a gshock for the other times when doing gardening or rough work.

explorer 1.  a big part of it is the realization that used the thing goes for about 4 thousand more than new

·

Put it on, walk into a door jamb to get the first scratch out of the way, then enjoy all the future ones you will make, especially the Explorer. Take it hiking! :-)

So you’re just preserving it for the next owner?

If you like the watch, appreciated value shouldn’t even be a consideration.  If you bought it to wear it, then wear it.  If you bought it to flip it, then flip it.

By this logic, I shouldn’t have worn my Hulk for over a month in the 1WC because it’s worth $15k more than retail.  I bought it to enjoy it so I wear it.  I’ve turned down all offers to sell it so the value doesn’t matter.

·

This is actually why I have been really hesitant to venture past the $1K cost of a watch.. I have a Seiko SPB105 that I love and it was ~$1000 even with it, I find I am hesitant to wear it, grabbing my someone beaten up SRP turtle instead quite often (or another sub $500 watch)...

Next time you look at that watch in a box, I want you to tell yourself, “Be Ferris… Not Cameron.”

·

The watch market value correction will erase more value from the watch than your  scratches will. ;)

·

man, this is the most tone deaf sack of bullshit I've ever heard.

your comment is my comment about your comment.

i love the concept except that ferris didn't own the car and waitaminute neither did cameron.

damn i gotta watch that movie again

This makes me think of the car analogy, I am paraphrasing but it is basically: A guy buys a Porsche and it becomes a garage queen. He puts barely any miles on it, and his logic is, he is preserving the resale value. Well someone said this scenario is like not having sex with your wife because you're saving her for the next guy. I know it is actually a much cruder way they said it but I think you get the point. You're saving the watch for the next guy/gal to enjoy. Life is short. Enjoy the watch that is why you bought it...

yeah - consensus is that i should wear that damn thing so that's what i'm doing.

Garage queen... I like that term. I had a friend whose father owned a DeLorean which he kept under a tarp in his garage and never did anything with it.  Thought at the time he was nuts yet here I am today.

Before and after, I wish someone made clasps guards for desk diving.

Wear it. I have a turquoise faced Oyster Perpetual 41mm that I just had serviced and the turquoise face put on. Then on a government website right before this past Christmas I won a 19.2lb bag of watches for $160. It contained 2 Submariners. The one I could see through the bag causing me to bid on it ended up being fake. The one I couldn't see ended up being real. Now I wear them both all the time. If something happens to them it doesn't cost much to have them serviced. Wear them and enjoy them. You only live once.

Yes! There’s nothing as satisfying as enjoying your favorite watch at the end of a long day from your favorite chair, secure in the knowledge that both are in mint condition!

Wear it with pride my friend.  It was bought by you using your hard earned cash.  You (and not someone else) deserves to enjoy it as much as you can.  By buying the Rolex you are somewhat rewarding yourself.  Worry about it being stolen, and not about being damaged. 😀

·

What if you die tomorrow? If you just can't enjoy wearing it, sell it. Why mentally torture yourself?
