What sayeth thou, oh wise Cruchers?

So, the other day I was on Instagram and every so often I get targeted ads from Amazon that show various watches and items related to my previous purchases. I noticed this Smith & Wesson branded watch and clicked the link to view it on Amazon: (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NRKC8RB/?coliid=INZRPY69NSX1Y&colid=5Y9SMULNNG5Z&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it).

At first I was assuming this would be like all the other products that get branded with a company not known for their watch manufacturing, but it surprised me when I saw it featured tritium and 200m of water resistance, all for $120. Despite the fact that it is a plastic or resin case and bezel, I was intrigued by it and there was a brief moment I actually considered buying it.

I'd be willing to give it a shot and Amazon has an extremely flexible return policy, and the Kohl's near my home takes returns for Amazon as well. It's convenient because you can literally just give them the item, no shipping label or packaging required, and they will send it back to Amazon for you free of charge.

What are you guys' opinions on this watch and do you think it would be worth taking a test drive to see if it's a keeper?

Says Currently unavailable. did you take the plunge?

·

I'd be slightly wary about a watch with a resin case from a manufacturer I don't know. (I assume S&W simply provides the brand label.)

The tritium is nice, but it would be the only thing that would draw me to this watch.

Says it still available when I click it. Maybe its a region locked item, although I've never heard of that.

This appears to be the company website that makes them.

Shows as available for me too.

After reading the description it appears to be a 120.00 watch. Right down to the Thailand movement Swiss components, minimal use of tritium at the 12-3-6-9 markers and hour/minute hands only, stainless steel case back and it's unique ability to stand up to the rigors of recreational scuba diving, swimming and snorkeling, water sports and in the shower.

Looks like that Website traced back to Campco, which produces quite a variety of consumer products.

So, I found this one (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BWFH46/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and decided to give it a try instead. Has more tritium markers and lists a Swiss quartz movement and titanium case. Once I receive it, I'll give it a look-over and decide if I'll keep it or send it back. I am 50/50 on whether it will be a good buy or not. It lists the lug width as 23.35mm, so i will try out a 22mm NATO and a silicone one that I have to see how they work.

List price on the website is nearly $200 but on Amazon it's $129. https://www.swiss-tritium.com/product/sww-357-bss

If you like the look maybe worth a punt, personally I'm not so sure about the small dial and handset compared to the rather large looking case

Swiss parts/Thailand movement.

I'm pretty sure the Amazon claim that it's titanium is an error.

No mention of it in the more detailed product description or the S&W web site.

But worth a shot at that price and Amazons return policy.

Good luck.

Hmm, for this kinda small dial it s very busy. Me thinks i ll pass on this one

I figured the same thing. My insurance policy is just returning it in the event it's a shit watch. Live and learn, right? I'm doing important research for the good of all watchkind.

Good luck on the buy. Thailand quartz manufacturing to me says Ronda so it's probably competent enough and at $120, you're not going to lose a ton on it. With Amazon's return policy, you're probably okay in any situation.

My only thought is that cheap PVD coating tends to wear pretty badly so definitely inspect and film it for damage on opening. Amazon is a bit hit or miss with Marketplace Purchases these days.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll make sure to have record of the unboxing in the case it gets damaged from the unpacking process.

Looks like that's the case. They have licenses with some well known companies, although some of the stuff I saw looks like some items I've seen on AliExpress. Most of their business must be in licensing logos to put on generic items. I'm taking on a chance on the watch. If it wasn't sold through Amazon, I'd have even more cautious reservations.

Some ETA quartz movements were made in Thailand…

·

Good luck, and let us know what you find. Might be the perfect watch to wear while eliminating the middleman.

Is that true?!?!? I had no idea. I always associate Thailand with Ronda.

My Gruen G.M.C. has a Thai ETA. I think some of my 80s/90s Tags do as well.

I get that these are different S&W watches than the one you posted but for many years now I've known people who've used them as door prizes and stocking stuffers.

Update: So, after some careful consideration (and having plenty of down time sitting at my desk barely doing any work) I decided to go with a different watch-- one with much more cachet and one with a lower chance of causing disappointment. I won't reveal it yet, but I will do a #NWA when it arrives this weekend.

Not low drag, high speed enough for the manliest of men, aka the tacticool mall ninjas. Looks like a watch for the shooting crowd. Someone buy one and gift it to Ian MacCollum/Karl Kasarda just for giggles.

Definitely not on the same level as the one I posted. Don’t worry, guys, I’m not gonna buy one. I’m confident you all know everything about watches and certainly know the quality of these watches from photos. Where did you learn this most valuable skill?

Your Wrist, Your Rules. If you're really digging it then ignore everyone else like most of us do anyway. 👍

I already was second guessing it, so it’s best I solicited some honest opinions.
