Buy a watch, help save the world - Part deux!

Hello friends!

I come back to you with another charitable auction.  Got a Vario 1918 Trench watch, grey dial with white lume, on crazy horse leather bund strap, and want to send it on to a new loving home, but also want to donate the funds to an incredibly effective and efficient charity, that is doing absolutely amazing work.  GiveDirectly DIRECTLY sends on funds to recipients in some of the poorest countries on Earth, with an incredible track record to-date.  The effort sprang out of the Effective Altruism movement.

The first auction worked out spectacularly, in which our esteemed colleague, @Bessio's winning bid helped to raise $1,350 for a Kenyan family.  These are the poorest of the poor villagers, earning less than the global poverty line of $1.90 / day.  All of the auction proceeds went directly to the family and will essentially double their income for the next 4 years!

Here's what I propose:

  • Let's open up bidding on the Vario 1918 Trench watch at, say, $20
  • Please post your bid by commenting below
  • The highest bid by Wednesday, 4/13, 12pm PT wins the watch
  • At that time, if you donate the winning bid amount to GiveDirectly, and take a screen shot of the completed donation, I'll do a matching funds donation as well

So, in summary:

  • Buy a watch
  • Have the entirety of the proceeds go towards lifting a family out of extreme poverty
  • DOUBLE the size of your charitable contribution through matching funds

Whaddya say?

You are a good man, sir!

By the way, the watch comes with your choice of a glow-in-the-dark dinosaur.  Winner gets their choice of any one of the 8 dinosaurs pictured above!

Bravo, sir!

Though, you have not specified which glow-in-the-dark dinosaur you want with the watch, should you win the auction.  Which dinosaur will it be for you?

Fantastic!  Yes!  You are correct!  That is a Nessy.  It is a plesiosaur.  If you win, it shall be yours!

You know, it just occurred to me that I should provide some more information about the actual watch itself:

Dude!  You already returned the dinosaur skull.  Getting yourself a glow-in-the-dark T-Rex ain't gonna satisfy you.

Hey, you gotta specify which dinosaur you want if you win!

Well, they’ve got a triceratops and a T-Rex coming, so it will be one or the other. Still debating.

I still believe this kind of a post should be bumped up the feed so more people can see it.

Now it's buried way down. If my name wasn't mentioned I wouldn't have been able to see it.

Too funny.  Nah, I'm a believer in the "rule of law."  I believe that all humans should be treated equally under the law, because all humans are equally evil and horrible.  The same goes for organizations and forum posts.  Just because this post is about giving to charity entitles it to no preferential treatment!

The only posts that should get preferential treatment are those about James Bond or Grand Seiko watches.

Sir!  You are the grand winner of the auction!  I will DM you to lock down the logistics on the charitable donation, shipping, etc., etc.

Congratulations, and thank you so much, sir!

Okay!  Winning donation of $300 confirmed.  I have also made a matching donation of $300!

But, there's a twist in the tale!  Turns out my workplace will also do matching funds, so that's a total donation of $900!

Thank you!!!
