What was your first serious/luxury watch purchase?

Curious to know where it “started” for you all.  My first self-funded watch purchase was a Citizen on vacation in high school, as well as many other attainable pieces including a #seiko and some Casios through college, post-grad, etc.  My first serious purchase was made a few months into my first careered position.  I saved up a bit and went eagerly for the best condition attainable #rolex at the time.  I was never thrilled with the color as I longed for the salmon dial, but the price was solid and I knew the jewelry shop owner well enough to trust the product without papers.  I wore it for a year, then traded up for another piece.  Ultimately, I traded it in toward my #cartier , first #montblanc , and some saved the rest toward future purchases.

What was your first serious/luxury/memorable watch purchase?  Do you have a photo or wristshot?  Does the piece still occupy Your collection/selection or is it gone but not forgotten?

I've worn a watch since I was in grade school (which was a very long time ago), but the first watch I purchased after becoming seriously interested in watches was a silver dial OP36, which I bought new about 4 years ago.

Are those photos of that first watch of yours? I've always loved the Rolex blue dials.

My first serious wafch was a second generation Tissot T-Touch, gifted to me at 16. It's unfortunately imploded and stopped reading any of the sensors but at least it tells the time, and tells me north!

Love the silver dials.  Yes, these are photos of the exact watch, including the first wrist shot I took in the store.  I am a fan of blue dials, but I unfortunately do not like to wear them.  So I traded up for something more my style.

I had wanted it for 25 years and finally got to a place where I felt my wife and I were financially comfortable enough to buy the newest version of the model.

A true icon.  I love this watch!  The white dial/black bezel seamaster was my favorite, but all of the dials pop!

As a teenager, I loved watches Swatch's, Casio's and Timex's, But for my 18 I wanted something special that I would keep for the rest of my life. It was a lovely 2 tone Rotary watch with a silver dial and a Sapphire crystal. Unfortunately we were burgled in 2011 and the watch was stolen, it had no value to anyone but me and probably was just throw away by the scumbag who stole it but I will never forget that watch.

Speedmaster professional hesalite 10 years ago…missing it as it is currently in overhaul maintenance and might take a few weeks to return home :(

A Certina. Back in the day it thought it’s the most amount of money I’ll ever spend for a watch in my life.💸

This was my first 'luxury' watch, well I've always admired watches but with life and thing like mortgages never was able to scratch the itch. Well a few years ago I received some vouchers for my 30 year service award and thought why not get something that will last and remind me of the service that I gave. Its still in my now burgeoning collection and will always be,it was my first 'proper' watch and it fired an interest in watches which is still with me now.

Sorry to hear that.  My first actual watch was also stolen.  terrible feeling. But great story, and onto better things!

My first serious purchase was my Speedy!

The first time I broke the four figure barrier was with the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date, but the first "luxury" watch I bought (and everyone defines luxury differently) was my Omega Aqua Terra, which I still own 19 months later and has pretty much become my every day wear. I haven't really lusted after another piece since I bought this watch, so the itch was definitely scratched.

This exact #omega railmaster black dial was on my short list throughout 2021, and again in 2022 (when I saw the #montblanc iced sea it was game over).  That said, I look forward to one of these some time :)

I’ve worn watches since I was 6. The first watch I purchased is no longer with me 🙁, but was a Bulova Accutron ca. 1969 (picture from the web).

My first tool watch was from the late 1990’s, a Luminox chronograph. Still in the collection and still comes out on ‘chore days’. Great watch.

Image

My first luxury watch was a 2004 Gerard-Perregaux, bought in 2009. Still gets wrist time for dress. Still a favorite.

I’m a lucky and grateful collector, got a lot of nice choices now.

guess it kinda depends on what ya all consider a serious watch purchase...

$200, $2000, $20000?

if anything over 1k is serious, then I'm out. it'll be awhile before I can throw money at something that I know I won't wear as much as my others. Especially to work or doing hobbies. js. ;)

serious is subjective.  Nothing to do with money, but the time you spend deciding on it, the reason for it, etc.

My first serious watch purchase was also my first vintage watch purchase. Being a fan of rockabilly music, mid-century modern design, and Elvis (of course), it had to be a 1950s Hamilton Ventura

August 2016, I plunged into watches - no pun intended - with this Tudor Smiley. I absolutely love it and cannot see myself selling it to buy any of my 'goal watches'.

My first serious watch "purchase" was my Cartier. I had a fake Cartier for most of my college years, and during the first year of work (I had no huge interest in watches and no shame wearing it 😂). My in-laws bought me the above as a wedding gift.

Image

For my father-in-law's 60th we were able to get him a nice Tag Heuer. That was my first luxury watch purchase with my own money.

Image

The first watch I bought for myself without any help was the Orient Mako II, as a celebration for making money again after a few years of break 😁

·

Breitling superocean 44. I love that watch

Love it!  I sold up the #rolex air king ultimately for the #cartier tank XL and the first of my #montblanc watches, and I honestly never looked back. Cheers!

I just stumbled across your SOTC post. Nice collection - I really like your Cartier Tank XL and Avenger 👏

·

The first watch I bought for myself, with my own money, was a Timex Expedition Chrono Alarm, which I bought at a Target in Orange County, California, in 2007. Still have it, although I no longer live in California nor in the US.

First luxury watch I bought was an Oris Aquis Date, in 2018. That one I've sold, but it was a great watch.

·

Mine was an AP ROO 15703ST. I’ve always been an active person so I knew I wanted a sports watch. (I have no dress watches in my collection.) I bought this watch by blowing my first huge paycheck from work😂
