I got the chance yesterday to try on both a 16570 and 226570.

Upfront, I say I’m no fan of Rolex; I’m an Omega fan-boy and was wearing my beloved Speedmaster at the time, so the Rolexes were against tough competition.

The 226570 is a typical modern Rolex - too big, almost brutalist in its design. It went on my wrist, I looked at it for a couple of seconds, shrugged, and it came straight back off and I never looked at it again.

The 16570 on the other hand: it really spoke to me. The proportions are spot-on. It wears low and close to the wrist. It makes the 226570 almost look like a pastiche in comparison. I still hate the cyclops. And yes, the bracelet is absolute crap compared to just about any modern bracelet.

It’s one of the (very) few watches I’ve tried that I didn’t want to take off. Was it better than my Speedy? Hell, no. But it’s a different proposition.

I may now be a fan of at least one Rolex (even though I still feel a bit dirty saying that 😊)

I haven’t shut up about the 16570 since then. My wife says my enthusiasm is “very cute”.

So where does that leave design knock-offs (I refuse to acknowledge them as ‘homages’) like this Pagani?

Look, I don’t have the resources to buy the Rolex. It would be years of saving for me to be able to afford it. If I bought the Pagani, every time I looked down at it I would know it wasn’t the watch I adored. I would know it was a wannabe. I’d know I’ll be a little bit embarrassed every time I wore it. Personally, I’d rather go without for several years, than spend my money on something that, ultimately, doesn’t mean anything to me.

Perhaps this one will appeal more to you then, if you're interested in an NH34 GMT.
