Rolex vs "poor's man" Rolex?

Tudor black Bay 58 is a better watch than the Submariner. Change my mind!

·

Why compare? Why dualism? Why binary thinking? What good does it do you? What does it bring to your life?

Just some questions.

·

Both are excellent watches basically made by the same manufacturer ,so I'm unable to comment sorry

·

A $5K CAD watch is not a "poor man's" watch.

·

I can't even afford to talk about them!!

·

IMO the BB58 is another great watch made by Rolex Tudor. The BB58 has carved out a space on the iconic dive watch list. Neither piece is a poor man's timepiece. The BB58 is a better value & the Submariner is the better equity play. As a watch lover I think both are incredible pieces. Seeing either in the wild is a great moment. Most non-addicted to watches people won't be able to tell the difference: The same effect when you see someone wearing a spotted faux fur clothing item or handbag . It begs the question "Leppard or Cheatah?" OK, maybe not quite the same. I digress. Both watches are beautiful

I would have the Tudor without any hesitation? Both great watches but I would not wear the Rolex. It sends out all the wrong signals.

I agree with @TimeJunkie that the BB58 represents "better value" at MSRP, but given that it is the "better equity play", a case could be made that due to after market pricing, the Sub is actually "better value".

I bought both in 2019, paid MSRP for Sub and got a small discount on BB58. If I wanted to sell, I could still get more for the Sub than I paid, but would lose money on the BB58.

From my experience, the Sub feels more premium when it comes to the parts of the watch that I interact with, which includes the bezel, the crown and the clasp, but not significantly enough to justify the difference in MSRP.  On the other hand, I have a slight preference to the look of the BB58 over the Sub, even though I like them both. If you take price completely out of the equation, I would say that the Sub is a "better" watch than the BB58, but very marginally. For me personally, if the financial aspect were to be ignored, and I could only have one, I'd have a very tough time deciding, but the aesthetic advantage that the BB58 offers would probably give it the win.

There both have there strong suits. Price quality etc. I am definitely going to put a Tudor in my collection and wear it proudly.

·

Can’t change your mind because I agree!

·

A lot of this is about context and personal preference. At this point in history I cannot imagine realistically buying a Rolex - what it means to me in 2022 is, I think, different than what it would mean to someone my age in 1962.

BUT - if some mysterious stranger offered me either a free Sub or a free BB58, I'd take the treasure, baby.

·

A BB58 is a great watch and fine tribute to a vintage Sub, but it’s a different watch and not comparable in the hand with either a vintage or modern Sub.

·

No need to change ur mind cause I'm right with you.

·

Depends on what is considered "better" ;)
Tudor doesn't have the standing / brand but it has some nice design aspects to it.

I think these are for two different kind of groups - but both are really great! :)

·

Better ? Really depends on which part?
I’ve owned both and the Sub is the better overall watch , the “pay what you get” is true, most of all the watch on the Sub is better then the BB58, not saying the BB58 is bad, for the price you get a hell of a lot of watch , if the Sub is 5 times the price doesnt make it 5 times the watch though. Just my 2 cents.

Honestly, this was a much different conversation 10 years ago but nowadays I think there is really not much of an advantage of buying a Rolex over a Tudor other than brand recognition and resale value. Prime example the Tudor Pelagos. A submariner is nowhere near 5x the watch as the Pelagos perhaps not even a better watch at this point but yet the price is. Opinions will vary this is just my take.
