I’ve met my hero: 2 weeks with this sub!

“Never meet your heroes”

So, my dad’s friend is a jeweler, he knows I’m into watches, so he lent me this sub. Needless to say that I was thrilled. At first at least.

I put it on... and I felt nothing, hum weird. Give it couple of days I said to myself

I didn’t find myself staring at the dial like I do with my (affordable) Seiko snxk79k. I was always telling myself “Look boy, you’re wearing an iconic watch, enjoy it” but I found nothing to enjoy. It was weird as I’ve always fantasized about having one in my collection

Maybe it’s the fact that’s its not mine, maybe it’s the fact that I didn’t earn it. But are these really valid reasons to find this watch dull

I realized that this hobby is all about the hunt, if I had some magical power to get any watch I want in the world I would be sorrowful as it would destroy my passion and kill this hobby I very much enjoy

PS: one thing that stood out is the fact that the watch is so comfortable to wear, at times I forget I had a watch on my wrist

PS 2: I still love Rolex, don’t kill me

'Underwhelmed' comes to mind... No worries, especially when the expectations were so high, this often happens! Merry Christmas!

"He lent me this watch"

The first shot is always for free

But actually you catched a good point.

In watches we can ofte be wrong, effected and influnced by the environment, society or our watcv enthusiast bubble.

I had the same feeling (or missing feeling) on some luxury watches after I pulled them off. It was like: "hmm...ok...that's it?"

So that's why I think to the affordable way is much more less hurting.

This hobby is also 99% about culture. Reading, searching, analyzing the market, checking prices, looking for alternatives, comparing, talking about, and starting the cycle again.

The least interesting watches for me are those which I could simply buy anytime but without any emotional bounding.

Even before buying I wait weeks or months. I let my emotions settle. In this time I keep on "visiting" the watch, look on pictures. In most cases I lose my interest to purchase the watch.

My favorite watches are those who can tell a story. Some are connected to a period of my life or a situation. Some were bought by pure coincidents because of crazy high discounts but totally my taste of a watch.

But if it's about Rolex I feel totally untouched by the Submariner, although it's a good watch and totally hyped. But my emotions are more for Datejust, because it's what I relate to "the typical beautiful watch" since my childhood.

But it might be also that the Rolex Submariner is just a "homage" of Invicta Pro Diver 😉🤭

That’s a beauty. What year is it ?

·

Really interesting! I'm guessing I might feel the same as I'm not in the Rolex camp but a great opportunity!

deep down, its not the watch for you. I know you probably want it to be, but it's probably not. if you can, try a Daytona or a GMT and see how you feel.

I was like this a little when I got my HULK and I still stand by the fact that it's the most annoying watch and a true hooligan of a watch. Basically it attracts too much attention and makes people a little jealous and sensitive towards you at times. Also it doesn't go with anything, unless you are dressed like an Elf haha, but the hype has brought it to become "a great watch". I got over it real quick tbh.

watches should fit your witst , and your life.

Like others have mentioned , try a GMT or even another brand . I am a big believer that your watch / collection should represent you , and you should love each one.

No doubt part of it is the fact you didn’t have to part with ten thousand+ dollars, so it doesn’t have the investment that buying it yourself would.

Sort of like the attachment we have with a rental car.

You probably aren’t a Submariner type of buyer.

Good to know for future reference.

There are plenty of people who love and own this watch and I'm happy for them.

Having said and meant that, the watch does absolutely nothing for me.  I turned it down last year without a seconds hesitation.

It's okay not to love an iconic watch.

Others have mentioned a GMT, and I concur.  Try a new GMT Master II.  It's a masterpiece.

I wear my watch on my right wrist so when the Rolex GMT lefty came out I was very happy,of to my AD to try on ,weird same thing happened to me I just didn't connect, you just know ,I own a sub and absolutely love it ,good job we're not all the same

I felt this way about the Speedy Pro. 🤷‍♂️

·

I think that part of the problem is the high expectation, but part of it is also that the archetypical tool watches (especially Sub, Speedy) are boring by design. They have been iterated upon very slowly and carefully.

They should tell the time and last for a long time. Ideally, you should forget that you are wearing one until you need it.

It is only the last few decades that they have become luxury goods, and unless you are attracted to their history, or purity of design, or status, or their aspirational price points, they can fall a little flat.

Maybe try a Doxa next time?

Well I think you just summerized the whole situation with this "like with a rental car". Absolutely true

This is so true for green watches or straps , they look great if you are wearing green or black , but otherwise can look out if place.
