Casio MTD-1010 BLACK SUBMARINER Review

Well I’m not going to review this watch with all the technical detail that you would expect from someone who reviews watches as profession. This more my experience with a fantastic watch as a novice in the hobby.

When I discovered this model it occurred to me that this must be one of Casios best affordable offerings in a size that makes sense for my smaller wrist. I believe this watch was discontinued in 2010 and I managed to score this on eBay used for a little premium. Owning the Duro is nice and I enjoy the over sized look on my wrist however I knew this was more appropriate.

This is a clear Rolex Submariner homage from the hand set to the 40mm case size with a very surprisingly strong loom. The distinguishing difference is the bracelet which unfortunately is by far my least favourite element of the watch. Casio clearly didn’t want a full replica which unfortunately meant the watch comes with this bracelet. Funnily I have had so many people mistake it for a submariner even in the G-Shock store. The endearment that of people’s realisation throws out watch snobbery. The charm of a Casio knowing how much it offers at an entry level price has been appreciated by owners of submariners and even AD’s.

The question that may be on your mind is what is this in relation to a Rolex or Tudor Sub. Is this just a cheap knockoff? Is this just an excuse or a lie to ones self about not being able to afford a rolex submariner? The truth is there is no definitive answer, the answer is really based on the person you are. Having experienced and held both size by side (Back-face two tone/ black face stainless) the quality difference is beyond obvious to assume and so those are simply irrelevant to explore. If you’re a Casio and Rolex fan then chances are you will lust over this for it’s charm and acceptance of value proposition. You wouldn't be fooling yourself or anyone else. Personally I am so content now owning this with the personal journey that I’ve been through with this watch. The scratches and scuffs are all character on a watch that gets worn. I don’t think a modern black Rolex or Tudor Submariner would make a difference to me personally, I simply don’t see the ‘need’, and as mentioned in my opening post the only similar watch that could enter my collection would be the Coke GMT and that’s for its difference in functionality and also as simple as it’s colours.

My final thoughts on this amazing time piece! Due to its affordability there is no worry about it, you garner all the style benefits without the luxury worries. And with a design that is versatile and possesses everyday wearability the watch has become a part of my everyday life. I appreciate it to be my gateway proud watch and it is guiding me through the entrance of this hobby!
