Pros and cons for the Orient Bambino?

What’s your pros and cons for the Orient Bambino?

Really like mine as a dress watch - elegant and classy. Some say its too big for a dress watch, at 40.5mm, but the size is perfect for me. I wish the accuracy and low power reserve were better, but that is average for that movement. Don't expect more unless your watch has an ETA-based movement with an extended power reserve or better. And the hands could be a little more pronounced for my aging eyes, but that is just me.

Cons: Leather strap feels like cardboard and it's 21mm wide. This particular model with roman numerals is very dressy and feels vintage inspired but the sizing makes it wear awkward (the diameter is manageable, but this style of watch looks clumsy in that size)

The pro is that it's an affordable automatic watch from a reputable brand. There are many styles and colors, and 3 sizes to choose from.

Considering one myself - I think it's the best-value dress automatic from a "major" (ymmv) brand. Also, I love the idea of having the same logo on my watch and my printer.

The only thing holding me back is deciding whether I'm actually looking for the best-value dress automatic from a major brand. I mostly travel and dress up for business events, so right now, I'm leaning more towards getting one pricey jumping-hour-hand dress quartz, then indulging my cheap mechanical urges on AliExpress (where the price point is so low that I feel comfortable popping casebacks myself). So although I'm really attracted to the Bambino, it's not currently feeling like a natural fit for my collection.

To be specific - I recently passed up the Bambino and ordered a Merkur Cross Line from AE for $90 shipped. I won't know if it's any good until it arrives, but it's a completely original design from a Chinese brand, the finishing gets a lot of praise online, and it's available in a really fun range of colours. (I wonder how many other people were inspired by the same Reddit post... https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/11rfhhy/merkur_i_could_stare_at_this_dial_all_day)

Hey dennisbible. What do you have against the date? Do you find it’s not legible, or is it the aesthetics? Or something else?

I just prefer no date, especially on this style of watch. Looks better without it.

Pros:

  • Big variety of sizes and colors.

  • Accessible for most enthusiasts with small budget.

  • Inhouse movement.

  • Reliable.

Cons:

  • Most models does look like a grandpa watch.

  • The logo doesn't fit to any Orient watch.

I own the Orient Bambino pictured here (as well as a small seconds and a Star Heritage Gothic) and love it. Like most I don't care for the OEM leather strap but this is easily changed, 21mm lug width notwithstanding. Larger watches work for me and the 40mm posture is not a hindrance while wearing a suit. And the price for what you get can't be beat. Job interviews, dates, weddings, funerals, raking leaves. The Bambino is up for anything you throw it's way.

I can do without dates on watches, but that's a can of worms for most folks. Hasn't kept me from buying a Bambino.
