Seiko Sport 5 Diver (Custom Strap)

To preface, I did not put much effort into grammar so I do apologise and I do tend to ramble so just scroll to the bottom for my rating just in case. Thanks! :)

My very first mechanical watch. Very happy with it. I do feel like I missed the my train so to speak with the discontinuation of the SKX before I even got into watches but this is still an awesome watch with an adequate water resistance (very well stress tested on holiday). At the start of my watch journey I was very into chunky watches, something which has changed recently, but this chunky body gives the watch a general feeling of security. The rotating dial is elevated above the crystal which gives a layer of protection from the mineral glass which tends to be scratch prone. I love that I don’t have to be precious with this thing and I feel like it can take a beating even though I‘m throwing it around. It just seems to fit all sorts of general uses. The dive watch design has become very popular recently and I believe it is very unique to those who don’t pay much attention to watches and overall suits all sorts of scenarios so the design reflects its overall versatility. I took this diving and guess what… it suits its purpose. The 10 bar rating held out but man was I worried and I would not recommend actually taking this dive watch diving sadly. I think I was just lucky. Despite its chunky appearance it is only thick in girth but its case size is very wearable. I have roughly 7 inch wrists and as you can see in the picture it suits it fairly well. Though I don’t know all my ins and outs of watch movements just yet, I can say it does sport an adequate power reserve and if you wear this daily it does not come up as an issue. The movement itself in the open back looks tinny and cheap, you can hear the winding rotor as it swings when you move around with it and does not sport any finishing just seems to be quite mundane in its presentation. The date setting can also prove to be tedious as there is no quick set feature for the date functionality. The dial is very high quality, no alignment issues and sports a bright loom that works very well under water. Overall it’s a very solid watch with a day/date functionality which seems to be rare for watches at this price point. It’s listed for £250 but you can easily find discounts up to as little as £180 as this popular model goes on sale very frequently. Seiko is perhaps, in my opinion, one of the best entry level watch brands for beginner enthusiasts especially those seeking your first mechanical watch. It will teach you a lot about watches. I believe there are much cheaper mechanical alternatives but for a large and trusted watch manufacturer Seiko provide not too expensive options but it does seem that they do lose some value.

Overall I rate this a solid 7/10
