Casio GM2100N-2ADR “Casioak” review

I play drum in a rock/metal band. When I’m gigging and touring, I need a watch that can take a beating and survive the shock from playing hard on the drum. Of course G-Shock is the obvious answer. But somehow G-shock has never been appealing to me before. I never consider having it, despite all the praises from horological reviewer everywhere. That is until I saw the Casioak.

I’ve been eyeing the first Casiok for a while, the GA2100. Somehow the octagonal shape is very appealing to me, instead of the basic G-shock shape. The black, monochromatic tone of it can works in almost any situation. And the dial is interesting for me, combining the digital display with analogue hands, with another hand showing the day display. It’s the first G-shock that I like.

And then the metal version came out, the GM one. I immediately fall for it’s looks. It’s like a more refine GA2100, a more refine Casioak. The first variant that I look for is the all black. Weirdly enough, they don’t make the all black metal version for the GM series. Turns out, they only make the all black version for the smaller ones, the GMS series. Which I think is a weird business decision. I tried them on at the AD, but it’s too small for my wrist.

So I went back to the initial size GM2100 and settled with this one, the blue navy one. Previously while looking from the website and pictures online, I had my doubt about it being too colorful. But when I see the real thing it’s actually looking really cool. The blue navy is not too saturated, sometimes it even looked like black in certain lighting. In the website they said that it’s 45mm diameter, but when I tried it on it didn’t feel like a big watch. My Hamilton “Cooper” even feels bigger than the Casioak. And it’s pretty lightweight for a metal case, making it easy for me to play drums I sometimes hardly notice that I wear it.

And I love the dial. It’s metallic material make a rustic sunburst looks, giving it more dimension than the reguler GA2100. It might not be the most legible dial due to the not so contrast hands, but it sure looks cool. A stylish and refine beater watch, literally beating the drums.

Now it’s my go to watch when I have my gigging schedulle. Can’t wait to bring this good looking bad boy and beat some beats in front of the crowds with it!

Tx a lot! Congrats on your purchase too! I’ve read issues like yours, and not yet found any better solution. Luckily for me with my 7”+ wrist that didn’t happen.

Yeah it's no big deal, still digging the net to find an alternative.

Maybe I'll end buying a Barton elite in 26mm and cut it to adapt it... will see

Great review! I’ve been on the fence about the Casioak myself so I’m glad to read a positive review.

nice watch man, woukd be nice to bring it to the stage. what band are you in?

I think it's a great watch - except for one feature I will mention in a minute. I have the bumble bee one; yellow strap and black dial.

The problem for me, after few months of help and after searching the net, I still can't set the date and stuff. This shouldn't be a problem for me as I rarely set the time on my watches. With the Casioak, though, the digital features are an important part of the aesthetics of the watch.

Out of curiosity, does drumming put a strain on certain types of watches?

Great review. I just happened to see this one in person at an informal watch get together last night and I have to say I was extremely impressed with how nice it looked. I have one of the resin models, and am really tempted to get one of these as well.

before I buy the watch I saw a youtube video tutorial about setting the watch, so that does help convincing me into buying it.
as for drumming goes, I read somewhere that put too much vibration to an automatic watch can change the regulation of the watch. I haven’t tried it yet, but it just make sense and I just avoid it
