Orient Kamasu x Seiko SKX009

Which one do you like better?

Specification wise, the Kamasu wins. Feel and look more expensive than it's price range, better movement with second hack, and of course the sapphire crystal. Better dimension and feel better on the wrist, with a "dress"ier looks.

But the SKX somehow has a certain charms that came with it. Despite the rattly jubilee bracelet. Despite the non hand wind mechanism. Maybe it's the legendary status. Or the shape and color combination that make it a classic. Or maybe because it's being discontinued, now it starting to become an iconic "vintage" watch?

For me, both are a keeper. Just have to figure out how to give  equal wrist time for both.

I had both of them multiple times but sold them again.

The SKX certainly has the x-factor. I mean, it's the SKX! But every time I compared it with another watch I felt like it's smarter to sell my SKX for the outrageous prices after it was discontinued than to keep it, because I didn't like the accuracy and quality.

On paper I thought that Kamasu (or Ray and Mako before it) would be great for me - but every I held one in my hand it just didn't click. I don't know why, but these are not for me.

In the end I didn't keep an SKX or a Kamasu, but I totally get the appeal they have.

Totally understand. I myself are tempted to sell my SKX with rising prices people are asking on the secondary market. But I see myself having the SKX as if like having a vintage motorcycle. It’s not the best technically, but I wouldn’t get a new one anywhere else. And it’s iconic.

maybe in the end it’s about what watches clicks with you, and make you feel good wearing it. Less about the hi spec or iconic watches, but how they make you feel wearing em.

this two were my selection when i was going to buy my first mechanical watch. there are certain charm and originality about skx009 design but unfornately its hard to find back then. on the other hand kamasu isnt the most handsome design but its a beast when it came to spec. i ended up buying the kamasu, and updraded the bracelet to miltat

I personally likes the looks of Kamasu. Looks more expensive than the price.

I like the look of the Orient better.  Besides the better spec, the second hand and day/date look more refined.  I still love my skx though!

·

The Orient, once modded, steps right up.  My Kamasu now sports new bezel & insert and a NATO.  And I would be willing/ able to purchase another if the mood hit.

I tried to warm up to the Orient, but the looks never really worked for me. Specs and price were right there, but I couldn't bring myself to want that watch, even though logically it would have made sense.

Have u tried it yet? At first I'm also not really fond of it, until I held it and put it in the wrist. It felt and wears really nice in my wrist. And in the end, bring joy wearing it. But then again the oldies kinda vintage looks of the Kamasu might not be everyones cup of tea.

·

Just my opinion but I think the Orient divers look "safer" vs. Seiko's more distinct designs. So I guess it depends on your preferences.

·

My ten cents……. The SKX variants have had their day, the hype since they were discontinued is calming down, yes they will be remembered in nostalgia but there are so many out there they will never be hard to buy and the older they get the less people will pay for what was only an entry level offering really.

The 'new' kid in the block a spec monster of its price point against an icon of the dive watch world, now that's a tough one. I'm slightly biased as a kamasu owner so I'll make it easy for you any day that ends in Y wear the kamasu and the rest... only joking that skx looks sweet so week on ,week off.

No, I haven't tried it. It's truly a design question, pretty much what you mentioned in your last sentence. There are quite a number of watches out there that would make a whole lot of sense, but are just not for me. If you like the Kamasu you are lucky, because you will without question get a very good value.

Good problem, man!

hardly a problem man 😀 just curious about what others think about these two divers

·

Orient is the better watch. Better price and QC.

·

I have never owned a SKX, but my modded Orient Kamasu has become a staple in my collection.

I own a Kamasu and it's great value and probably my favourite watch in my small collection. However my good friend Gareth @gasworks has the SKX and I am very envious. Especially as he has swapped in the hackable movement. I would like to get one at some point as they remain highly desirable!
