Watches in the Wild (Final Push, Volume 36)

Disclaimer: Vintage Zodiac Olympos for the day

This is the thirty sixth in a semi-regular digest of cool watches I happened to see this week.

Past posts in this series have been hashtagged to #watchesinthewild.

As always, my general policy is that I never ask for wrist shots (because approaching strangers and distant acquaintances to talk about watches is already weird enough) so all pictures below are sourced from the internet. People are mostly cool, I try not to annoy them.

I think I'm calling it.  We're scheduling an induction for next week and my period of low sleep is about to begin just before Memorial Day.  This will be the last #watchesinthewild for some months.

And I've gotta say, if we're going to end things (temporarily), what a way to go out because the past week has been absolutely gangbusters for watch spotting.  No long narrative this time around, we have many watches to cover and not a ton of time.

I hope you enjoy!

Grand Seiko SBGA407

Image

Seen on the wrist of a young man who dragged his girlfriend into a watch store.  I offered a small compliment but it was largely unacknowledged.  Given how grumpy his girlfriend looked, I decided to beat a hasty retreat.

I am reminded of the first couple of times I dragged my wife into a store to look at a watch.  She was a good sport the first two times but by trip number three she was clearly tired of the charade and told me that I clearly wanted the watch and I should just buy it.  I didn't really need to waste her time with the song and dance going forwards.

I didn't end up keeping the watch but it did turn out to be a valuable early lesson in my marriage.  It's okay if you don't have the same hobbies. She honestly might just be happier if she sits this one out.

One thing she shouldn't do is complain about his watch taste because I think the Blue Snowflake is the best of the Snowflake dials.  With great respect to the original and it's descendants (most recently the SBGA211), the blue is just a classier alternative.  I think the dial oscillates between sky and dark blue depending on the lighting and satisfies the most important criteria of a watch dial for me; subdued enough to not distract but always interesting to look at.

You might complain about the on dial power reserve (***cough*** @thekris) but I actually think it has the look of snow swept to the side, as if by a windshield wiper or plow.  I dig that wabi sabi asymmetry and do not think it detracts from the beauty in any way.

It wears great, feels great, looks great and always provokes a conversation among watch dorks.  What more could you ask for?

Monta Skyquest Pepsi

Image

Seen at the farmers market the day before Mother's Day while trying to find a very specific cheesecake for my super pregnant wife.  I had the two girls with me so there was no conversation but if I were alone, I would have tackled him.

Monta is one of those brands I have zero hesitation in recommending to other people but tend to stop short of wanting to own myself and I have often wondered why that might be the case.

This is not a shortcoming of quality mind you, far from it.  More than any other microbrand I can think of, Monta nails the tactile feelings of a quality watch.  Balance, weight, finishing, complication, all of it is well considered and well executed.  The Skyquest is a remarkably good watch.

And yet, I find the product for all its technical perfection all a bit cold.  Kinda like Rolex.  I have wondered why that is and I have come up with a simple supposition.

The perfect watch doesn't exist.  But if it did, most of us wouldn't buy it anyway.

I don't believe perfection is what makes us love a watch despite the repeated claims by YouTubers and watch influencers.  Rather it is their foibles (perhaps their point of view) that animate our connections to these tiny wrist sized automatons.  For better or worse, the flaws (that we can live with) are what make these watches feel alive to us and imbues them with elusive character.

This is not to say the Skyquest is perfect.  It surely is not.  It's probably a touch big for me and I don't know that I love the choice of the gold markers on the aluminum bezel.  But it's very middle of the road, a watch that feels a bit like the default setting for a GMT.

So I stay on the sidelines until Monta comes up with something that someone else will surely feel falls short and I can love wholeheartedly.

Seiko 5 SNK809K1

Image

Seen at church on the wrist of a teenager.  I asked about it briefly and got plenty of opinions on watches, from size to styles.  Apparently he's the proud owner of a two watch collection, this Seiko flieger and a two tone Invicta pro-diver with aspirations for many more.  Perhaps there is hope for the next generation.

I'm admittedly not much of a Type B flieger guy but I did rather like the way this watch looked on wrist, with the old style sword hands and the red tipped seconds.

Seiko 5 SRPE61

Image

Another Seiko 5, one I know a lot more about.  Seen on the wrist of a college freshman off to his first year at Bowdoin, on the broadly excellent aftermarket bracelet from Long Island watch..  I am intimately acquainted with this watch because it used to be my watch and was gifted to him when he graduated from high school.

The first watch my dad bought me was a crappy old grey dial Seiko in New York City, to make sure I didn't look to unprofessional at a summer internship.  When I was a much younger (and much svelter) collector, a far more experienced watch collector gifted me a Seiko 5 as encouragement to start on my own path.  It is for these reasons and many more that Seiko has always been irreplaceable in my affections.

We don't buy watches because they are particularly useful.  Watches, particularly mechanicals, are fundamentally emotional items.  They are tokens that remind us of more important things: places we have visited, memories both happy and sad, and experiences that we will treasure for many years to come.

I bought this watch initially because of the sunburst grey dial (a tribute to my father's first watch given to me) and because I loved the Arabic date wheel, which reminded me of my last trip to the Middle East.  I love the brushed bezel and case but eventually felt it was wasted in a broader collection like mine.

And so it was gifted to a dear friend's son, a young man who is trying to figure out his way in the world and had, on occasion, expressed interest in starting a watch collection of his own someday.

I can't think of a better place for a Seiko 5 to go.

Casio G-Shock Master of G Mudmaster

Image

Seen on the wrist of a young man at lunch.  No conversation but I would say that it was definitely a bold choice of watch on a sub, 6 inch wrist.

First go read @Uhrologe 's latest column on the decline of Casio.  You may not agree with his conclusions, but it's wonderfully and robustly argued. I could not have said what he said better myself.

I don't think I ever had that "love at first sight" moment with Casio that many collectors seem to have had in their early collecting years.  I am a Seiko man myself, by history and design, and digital quartz has never really appealed to be on an aesthetic level.

But that's not to say I don't appreciate G-Shock and their intense focus on durability, but a large degree of watch wearing to me is aesthetics and this one just didn't hit.

Still, I don't see many of the higher end G-Shocks in my day to day and this stuck out.

TAG Heuer formula 1 blue

Image

Seen at a Vietnamese restaurant on the wrist of a elderly gentleman.  No conversation.

I highlighted the Red Bull racing version of this watch about 7 months ago, during my trip to Mexico City.  Enthusiast watch this is not but it encapsulates the conundrum that many watch enthusiasts have with Tag Heuer as a brand.

Heuer is a brand steeped in real deal watch heritage.  Edouard Heuer invented the oscillating pinion, essential to the horizontal clutch of most chronographs.  Heuer was the first Swiss watch in space (on the wrist of John Glenn).  Heuer even was one of the first (if not the very first) to produce the automatic chronograph.  There are few in La Chaux de Fonds (or indeed in Switzerland) that can match Heuer's history.

As for TAG....well TAG was a race car company and a private jet brokerage.  As far as I know, their first watchmaking activity was in 1985 when they bought Heuer.

It is the combination that brought to market the Formula 1 series, a racing themed series of largely quartz chronographs aimed at the mass market.

I confess, I don't really find these watches all that interesting from a horological perspective.  But from a business perspective, I find this continued focus on quartz fascinating.  While most watch makers do have extensive women's quartz models, Tag is the only major watchmaker that I can think of that has heavily invested into quartz across its men's collection (aside from Citizen).

And it seems to be working.  According to the WSJ, Tag Heuer is well on its way to being the next billion dollar watch brand (a feat only matched by 10 others).

Perhaps it's as simple as this.  You may not like the watch but maybe it's just not for you.

TAG Heuer 2000 blue (Automatic)

Image

Seen at a farmers market on the wrist of an older gentleman.  From a modern TAG to a neo vintage one.

I had forgotten just how agreeably sized these watches were (38mm and less than 10mm tall) and the bare steel bezel with blue dial is probably my favorite of the color variations.

While the S/EL gets much of the collector love (looking at you @valleykilmers), I actually like this later iteration of Tag sports watches a bit more.  They abandoned the odd snakelike bracelets for a more classic presidential style and made the cases much more angular and sculptural.  The dials are always pleasing with a sunburst blue and a jaunty 12 up top.

I even think this era of Tag had largely moved past the QC issues of earlier eras.  Just a great all arounder from the early 2000s.

Breitling Chronomat 36 two tone

Image

Seen on the wrist of a fashionable woman racing to grab an Uber.  No conversation.

I recognized this watch entirely due to the great women's watch buying saga of 2022.  While I have no desire to revisit that torrid and terrible time, I came away with a greater appreciation for Breitling and its new series of 3 hand Chronomats.  They are absolutely wonderful watches.

I've been particularly taken with the 36mm version.  The dial is beautiful and well proportioned.  It feels like a pure luxury sports watch with decent water resistance and looks the match.  The movement is based off the excellent ETA 2892 and is chronometer certified by COSC. The rouleaux bracelet is one of the most comfortable bracelets I've had on wrist in many years.

And I mean....look at that dial!  Breitling has been rightly criticized over the years for making watches that only the burliest of wrists could wear.  You might like the style but didn't need the arm workout.  With these?  These are fabulous and thin and come in sizes that even @Aurelian might find appropriate.

There are minor niggles. I think the false dive bezel and lack of screw down crown (standard on the larger version) are a little disappointing.

But these are small flies in a canvas of general excellence.  If you haven't already, you should stop by your nearest Breitling AD to give these a whirl.

Rolex Submariner "Ceramic Blueberry"

Image

Seen while outside an Apple store on the wrist of a gentleman.  I had a brief conversation but there is little to relate from that conversation aside from the fact that it was in fact a white gold Submariner with a blue ceramic bezel.

Harkening back to my constant repartee with @Rolexahoma on the Yachtmaster and stealth wealth Rolexes,  all I can say is....

Image

At any rate, this is the definition of a watch entirely for the wearer.  Watch nerds might fawn over it but to most of the world, it's another Rolex diver with an off colored bezel.

I can't tell if I like this watch or not.  I'm all for the wearing of watches for internal reasons rather than external reasons....but at the same time, white gold makes it looks like every other steel sub.

It's deeply vexing.

Citizen Fujitsubo

Image

Seen on the wrist of a gentleman while queueing at a dumpling restaurant.  I admit, at first, I mistook this for a BB54 (don't know how old blindo here managed to miss that) but I managed to get it the second time.  He seemed surprised when I identified it, but pleasant enough when I asked his opinion on it.  He related that he'd bought it on a whim off of a grey market dealer and, while it was comfortable enough, he was having some trouble bonding with it.

I think he would know.  You see, the gentleman in question is a JDM Seiko and Citizen collector of some quantity (over fifty watches, he estimated) and he mentioned that the primary criteria for something sticking in his collection is that there needs to be something absolutely beautiful and unique about it, even if there are serious problems.  The problem with the Fujitsubo he reckoned....everything was fine but nothing took his breath away, comparing it to his itanium Promaster divers (of which he owned the green) and his Seiko Marinemaster Reduced (SPB187 with the blue sunburst dial and black steel bezel).

We traded watches for a bit (Seiko SARF011) and I'll be honest, I think he got the better end of the deal.  I think I agree with him.  The Fujitsubo is a watch that feels competent, well proportioned, value oriented, and utterly anonymous.

No hate if you love this watch, but there's just nothing about it that delights me.  The mercedes hands are....fine....and Citizen can lay claim to some history with them.  But the shiny steel bezel (whose clickiness I would evaluate as being a solid 5.5 out of 10) clashes with the dull bead blasted titanium case and the tang buckle is unsigned.  The black and white colorway is very subdued...design wise they could have gotten away with it if there had been more interesting lines and angles to the case.  As such, it was dull tones on dull tones and just made me a bit sad.  The rotor is very very noisy.

This is a very competent watch that brings me zero joy.  Based on reviewer love for this watch I wager I'm going to be in the minority here with my opinions and that's completely fine!  I'm comfortable being a contrarian.  This is surely a watch for someone....but not for me.

Panerai Luminor PAM00422

Image

Rolex Datejust two tone black dial

Image

Seen on the wrists of two gentlemen at a tony restaurant after an afternoon of excellent watch window-shopping with a new watch buddy.

It was a bit of a hilarious cliche.  Two men in their 40s sharing a bottle of wine with a woman who I suspect was 15 years younger.  Nothing untoward at all (she did offer to scoot over a seat in order to let them sit together at the bar and they offered to share a bottle in thanks), just funny how cliches can happen even without even intending to.

I don't honestly have a ton to say about either of these watches (having covered numerous similar looking Luminors and Datejust before) so I'm going to use it as an opportunity to talk about watch window shopping with friends, one of the quiet pleasures I have discovered recently.  This is not an original idea of course, having been introduced to it by @HotWatchChick69 , but I'm surprised at how much I have enjoyed it over the past few weeks.

Not only do you get to try on some cool watches, you get to know a cool person a little bit better.  It's basically a play date for watch nerds and I'm totally into it.

In this case E (anonymized obviously) is the proud owner of a Submariner (a gift from his wife's parents) is much more nascent (less jaded?) in his watch collecting journey than I am.  He's entranced by Grand Seiko dials and the rugged toolishness of a Longines Zulu Time GMT.  E was a joy to spend a couple hours with and he even convinced me to go and try on the new Tag Heuer Carrera Glassbox (a watch that now lives rent-free in my mind).

As I take off for my watch spotting paternity leave, I hope you've bothered some random stranger about their watch.  Maybe you've made a new friend.  Maybe you want to invite that friend on a watch spotting/window shopping junket.

Finally, I trust that this column has convinced you of the fundamental truth of watch collecting.  Watches are great, but spending time with other enthusiasts is so much better.

Until our next time....what cool watches did you see this week?

Nice vintage Olympos....would be a good 1WC candidate.

I hope that you resume this after your paternity leave. It has been a good "reporter in the field" view for some of us.

This week for me was lawyers wearing Breitling (2).

·

Dang et!!! Greg got first post!! Argh !! Savings this for later stupid work got me working today… 🤨…. I wanted to get a first responder Badge!! Woot argh…

·

I love these and will miss them while you are adjusting to your new chapter and bonding with your wife & child. Congratulations!

·

Great stuff as always. Also, I DID IT AGAIN! I recognized a Seiko Tuna on the wrist of a doc at work. Not a particularly difficult watch to spot, but I’m impressed with myself none the less. Especially because he was asking questions about the patient while I was eyeballing his watch.

Hah, what's a watch that has less water resistance for a summer watch fast than a JLC Worldtimer? A vintage Zodiac.

I'll be back though it's hard to say when exactly. Experience suggests that kids don't really work on my petty adult schedules. Whenever they sleep through the night I suppose!

I'll be back. This is kiddo number 3, so I'm not exactly a novice parent but I am too experienced to think that they're going to abide by my timelines 😉

Two in two weeks! Maybe you should continue this column in my absence.

I love when I see Tunas in the wild. For whatever reason, I feel like they're such oddball watches that it must be an enthusiast wearing them.

I’d be happy to continue these posts, but I’d put one out once every 5 weeks and it would be one paragraph. I think WC deserves better. Congrats on your impending bundle of joy.

Superb finds and thoughts as always. I need a man-date watch shopping excursion soon, I fall asleep to the stupid baby swing tunes in my head and I'd much rather dream about GS dial sheens.

The perfect watch doesn't exist.  But if it did, most of us wouldn't buy it anyway.

Well if that's not poetic and true then I rest my case your honor. Only perfect.. FOR YOU.

Swatch Blue Boat

Image

Seen this week on an older gentleman from Romania. Says he got it from a family friend before a tragic death about 20 years ago as has worn it ever since in memory of his friend. A touching story and an honestly beautiful watch, I initially suspected a Mark series from afar but the bracelet gave it away. Swatch was never my thing growing up but this field style looked really cool with scratches and marks.

Good luck to @Edge168n with the new one and try to enjoy the time away from watches and nerds. I say try because I know how f*cking hard the first months are on the parents and other kids. Many times I felt like I would punch a wall if one more person told me to "enjoy" or "relish" the time. It's ok not to enjoy and instead simply endure. You will be missed and we all wish you and mom best of luck.

A beautiful story and a wonderful watch spot. I've occasionally felt like I should get into vintage Swatches at some point. There's a lot of super cool designs in the back catalog.

As for kid #3, I imagine I'll be fine. Or as fine as no sleep for three months minimum can be. She'll be very well loved regardless and I'll get to sleep at some point again. 😉

Love the steel version and the mystery dial is probably my favorite part about these watches. You have a looker!

I’ve found Delta flights to offer some of the best watch spotting, and having had to deplane and switch gates on a trip home last weekend I got to spend a lot of quality time gawking at wrists in Seattle. Notably: an aluminum bezel, no cyclops Sea Dweller, an aluminum bezel Pepsi GMT (worn by the pilot, no less!), a Breitling diver chrono, a neo-vintage IWC UTC on bracelet (I think that guy and I would have gotten along), and the creme de la creme - a Patek Phillipe Pilot Travel Time in white gold. My trusty Seiko SARX045 was on wrist, and had the flight been delayed any longer I would’ve tried to organize an airport RedBar meeting.

Oh, I also walked past an Omega Speedmaster. So yeah, lots of great watches out there in the world. Cheers @Edge168n , and I’ll look forward to the return of your series!

Excellent spots and there's some high powered stuff there! I actually had to look up the IWC UTC watches...I never knew those existed. And that PP Travel time....once was when I lusted after that watch mightily.

I think I don't notice the difference between airlines in terms of watch wearing....but I do notice the difference between destinations. Folks going to Hawaii or Las Vegas are decked out...less so for a midweek flight to Kansas City (not that there's anything wrong with Kansas City).

As for the column...

New to this app and reading posts like these are what it’s all about for me. Reading about people’s watches they wear on their wrist is a small glimpse into a persons’ life and that is the most fascinating thing of them all and what makes this hobby so cool.

·

Your meme is 💯 spot on! It’s uncanny how the universe can put a thought about the “Blueberry” Sub into both our minds in the same week! I was doing my thing watching YouTube watch content and talked to my wife about that very watch and how it was that only those deep in the Rolex rabbit hole would recognize it for what it was. 🤣

You’ve earned a well-earned hiatus from Watches in the Wild but not gonna lie I’m going to miss them while you sip on cocktail with Mezcal or snort cocaine or whatever it is you’ll be doing trying to stop your AI from cataloguing all the watches while looking like your paying attention to kid #3!

It's a deeply vexing watch. I think I've mostly come down on the side of not liking it all that much (because submariners even white gold ones are just not that interesting to me) but appreciating it for what it ia.

This Terminator's AI is about to get a significant processor downgrade from sleep deprivation and the wailing of a newborn. Babies aren't renowned for amazing watch collections anyway as far as I can tell. I'll be back to it after the summer I think and the hiatus will probably do me some good.

Hey man, you gonna take paternity leave? Or just juggling everything while also taking care of the kids?

Nothing like being a small business owner while having kids right? My business partner will cover things for a month or so and I'll have some time to ease into the summer and fall.

But watch activities are probably deep sixed for a bit until nearer the end of the summer 😉

Missed this edition when it came out, so glad Bites @Deeperblue put me on it!

And….Boo! Ssss! Putting your babies in front of your allegiance to Watches in the Wild series, for shame!

Hopefully the new kiddo is as prodigal as you with watch spotting, something the next generation can benefit from.

I saw that Rolex Deep Sea on an angry guy on the ferry. He was scary but his watch size was scarier. That thing is a beast. Super noticeable though, so if that’s your goal, perfect 👍

because I think the Blue Snowflake is the best of the Snowflake dials.

Wrong! This is the best snowflake: 😃

Re G shocks - I’ve never tried one that didn’t overhang my wrists horribly, so kudos so my toothpick wrist brethren who bear that cross.

Re white gold Rolex Submariner 😂🤣😂.

Design meeting:

Q: how can we make this completely overvalued tool watch much much worse?

A: I know! let’s make it heavier, more scratchable and delicate, be indistinguishable from the base model… AND we charge a magnitude more for it! Ha ha ha! And they will still pay double for this silly thing on the secondary market!!

(apologies to my buddies here who love this watch, I’m just having fun here)

Stay healthy and happy my friend, I’m sure #3 will go smoothly. 👍🍻💪

I hope this isn't the last edition. A guy from an insurance/roofing company knocked on my door just now (we had a recent hail storm)... wearing a 40mm Submariner. His "mentor" in the truck has a "Kermit sub" and I told him they'll need to start calling it the Starbucks again to not run afoul of Oris now that they have the Kermit Pro Pilot (I'm an IP attorney 😉). He was so excited that I knew about watches!

I don't see a lot of Kermits or Starbucks so that's a rare spot. Very cool!

Definitely not the last one but gotta get through the early baby phase of number 3 first. Annoyingly, I am spotting just as many watches as I was before so it's going to be a big update when it comes. Stay tuned.
