Notes for Newcomers:

If you are new to this thread and enjoy photography then feel free to post your pictures! We run a fresh photography thread each week, starting on the Sunday, and have a guest judge set the theme and pick winners each week. You are welcome to post as many pictures as you wish with a connection to that weeks theme. The runners up will be mentioned in the following weeks thread and the winner gets a mention and their winning photo in the weekly newsletter.

At the moment we have lots of guests joining in the thread from the #1wc , but you don't have to be in the challenge to post in the thread.

Winners also get an exclusive 'Winners Badge' for their WC profile!

If anyone wants adding to the tagging list, DM me to let me know👍You certainly don't need to be on the list to post in the thread, it just helps people see the weekly post when its put up.

Happy snapping!

Well as I'm enjoying the attic bedroom inside the hallowed home of @HotWatchChick69 after a night of watch debauchery. The theme for this week: FRIENDS

Show us a watch that you associate with a person you care about. Maybe a watch that was gifted to you or that you plan to give to someone. Go!

Thank you @Max for the timely topic selection!

So, as some of you probably know, my grandmother passed on Memorial Day at the age of 91. Her husband of 69 years, my grandfather, predeceased her last year about 3 months short of 100. This was his dress watch, given to him by my parents for his 75th birthday. It's now mine. His will stipulated that certain pieces of his personal property were to be given to me at my Dad's discretion. Dad decided that with her passing, it was time for this piece to come to me. Now, when I wear this (after the 1WC ends of course), I will think of him and my parents. As a smaller watch, this can also be something I leave to my daughter.

EDIT: Upon further review of the #1wc rules, it appears that my challenge watch must also be in the photograph. As such, to ensure compliance with all applicable rules of the #1wc, I offer this in lieu of the earlier photo for challenge purposes:

From what I can grab quickly. The citizen series 8 was a gift from my wife, the snkx623 (skx013 snk623 mod) was a gift to a friend, and my latest build for my wife that I recently finished.

Could you be anymore clear?

·

Dang et!! Got no friends 😖

·

I think I may have to tap out on this one. I got no watch in my possession that I associate with someone close (or distant for that matter). Forcing the issue just for the sake of competing in #1wc feels wrong.

The photography club seems like a nice thing in itself, well done to @Aurelian for promoting it through #1wc.

For me this has been the best part of the MoonSwatch saga. Buying one as a gift to one of my friends for her birthday. Now, we have matching watches like high school bffs. And I love that silliness!

Love your strap mods

·

This one’s easy!! And it even aligns with my #1wc choice happily

My GS Sakura 413 is the ‘cherry blossoms’ watch…and cherry blossoms means great times with friends and family for me 🌸

It’s tradition to do Hanami every spring. It is family and friends getting together to sit under the full bloom cherry trees to drink and eat. And we should consider our luck that we’re there together in this beautiful spot.

Years ago as a “hobby”, I was cashier for a social club for mature, well-educated singles. One night after that evening’s dance and light dinner was over, a member couldn’t get his Cadillac started. He had called a tow truck but had no way to get home (quite a few miles away) and had not brought his heart medication. I offered to drive him home, even though it was well out of my way, and as we arrived there he said that he could feel that his heart was getting into trouble so he had arrived home just in time.

He later said that giving him a ride was probably a life-saving event for him, and we became good friends, even though he was decades older than me. We would meet for lunch, and one time he gave me a watch that he had won for life insurance sales, the field in which he had made a very good living. It wasn’t an expensive piece, but now that he’s gone, it serves as a reminder of him and our friendship.

Engagement/wedding watch from the (now) wife; received a couple of months after I proposed — thanks Rolex waitlist, sheesh! 😅 This shot was taken the same evening, as I got home from the office; stepped out for a celebratory drink. Best part of this is that she knew I was working my way up to a purchase and had been secretly skimming my YouTube playlists ☺️

This watch my Dad received for attending a conference. It's numbered 328 on the case back (out of how many it doesn't say). Surprisingly, the automatic movement is still running fine without a service after more than two decades. It's not particularly well finished, and the size of the crown makes it a real chore to operate, but I think it's quite charming nonetheless.

My Dad has no real interest in watches though, so he just wears a Steeldive 1970 that I gifted him and I keep tabs on this one😅

If you look into the sapphire, you’ll see a reflection from a beach parasol, this pic reminds me of our best friends and I took this photo last year in turkey whilst we were holidaying with them!

I found this Timex Q M Cell watch head in a box of my father's personal belongings, which I was given in 1991. I don't remember him wearing this particular watch, and I'm a bit surprised that he held onto it. My father resisted wearing quartz watches; instead, he preferred hand-wound models. He had worn mechanical watches through a couple of wars and during his time spent living on three continents before arriving in the USA in the mid-60s.

However, he didn't have much of a choice when it came to watch brands or movements. All purchasing decisions, big and small, were made by my mother, the lady with the iron purse, who had the only fingers that could unlock its snaps. My father wore Timex or similarly affordable brands purchased at department stores like Bamberger's (later renamed "Macy's") or Two Guys. These stores were mainstays for low-to middle income families in the Northeast during the '70s and early '80s.

Surprisingly, many of his quartz watches simply disappeared or had a run of "faulty" batteries. I firmly believe that most of them lie at the bottom of the mighty Passaic River, which he walked by on his way to work for decades. He eschewed leather straps; his watches were worn on cilice-like flexible metal bracelets, the kind without a clasp, making it easy to move over a cuff but under his welding glove for quick reference. He wasn't an enthusiast or excited about watches; they were part of the uniform, to be placed on the wrist right after popping in your dentures. Anyway, I cleaned it up as best I could and put it on a vanilla-scented rubber strap, which is the only 18mm one I own. That's all I got. Have a great weekend.

·

This is a watch that I bought when my son was born. I was looking for one that would be "manly" from the boy's perspective. I do have more expensive watches in my collection, but this one was for this special occasion. I bought it with only one true purpose. I would love to have the same influence on my son as my stepfather had on me. As a kid, I truly admired his strength and physical appearance, as he was into sports and had an active lifestyle. So I wanted a G-Shock-like timepiece but in steel. It is heavy, bulky, rigid and manly. I want to pass this one to my son as soon as his wrist can handle it. Until then, I wear it during our holidays and always when driving - as my good luck charm.

This is Molly’s watch

She left it here when she left us 20 years ago.

This is Molly’s watch.

It is priceless although It is not an expensive watch.

This is Molly’s watch.

It tells us of Molly’s time with us although It can’t tell time anymore.

I found this watch of my fathers desk some 20 years ago. I had never seen him wear it and the only reason he still had it was because he has received this watch form his parents in the late 1940s or the early 1950s.

Image

It was running very poorly it at all and had probably never been serviced. I asked if I could have it and see if it could be fixed. I assume it is a Rotary. It used to be slightly more legible and the the letters rota… were still there.

The watch was serviced and it was running again with +5 to +10 min a day but I still wore it occasionally and was very happy to have this cool little machine for my father. However, it mainly lived in the drawer doe to its small size of 34 mm. Yes, and those bloody cellphones.

A few years ago (before the Pandemic) I had this little watch serviced again and when I come home with it my oldest daughter go a hold of it and instantly fell in love. So now she it the happy owner of her Grandfathers old watch.

Image

And it dose fit her much better.

Wasn’t going to enter this week, lack of time, but then I was given a watch by my father, that was a gift to him from his father. And it’s rather nice. (Dust is under crystal, and I am scared to clean that) So I took a photo, just for this. Then, I felt bad for a few other watches that were also gifts — from my wife, from my sisters-in-law… basically over half my watch collection was a gift at some point. So there is the one new shot, and a few old favourites most of which are not from Photo Club, but from Daily wear shots:

Watches and their origins of friends and family (from left to right of course)

1. My aunt gifted me this projects hatch watch for my birthday after she won it in our family Christmas white elephant party a month earlier and i wasnt able to steal it 😂

2. Swatch gifted to me by my pal in the bankers office back at my high school when i was the student body treasurer.

3. Casio DBC 611 my #1wc watch was gifted to me from my mother in Christmas of 2021.

4. Amazon bought skeleton watch gifted to me from my high school ceramics teacher who I consider a great pal after learning under him for 3 out of 4 years of high school.

5. Casio Edifice gifted to me by a family friend who heard i like watches and apparently had this laying around. He gave it to me since he never wore it.
