Notes for Newcomers:

If you are new to this thread and enjoy photography then feel free to post your pictures! We run a fresh photography thread each week, starting on the Sunday, and have a guest judge set the theme and pick winners each week. You are welcome to post as many pictures as you wish with a connection to that weeks theme. The runners up will be mentioned in the following weeks thread and the winner gets a mention and their winning photo in the weekly newsletter.

Winners also get an exclusive 'Winners Badge' for their WC profile!

If anyone wants adding to the tagging list let me know👍You certainly don't need to be on the list to post in the thread, it just helps people see the weekly post when its put up.

Happy snapping!

P.S. Thank you for your patience to those winners who don't have their badge yet! I'm on it!

Hello all…

My theme for this week is “Obsolescence”

“Life and death come and go like marionettes dancing on a table. Once their strings are cut, they easily crumble.”

Yes, I am a mood.

Have a nice day.

I was too busy last week to post a photo around the theme. But I wanted to commend @Aurelian for the excellent choice in poetry. It’s one of my favorite and was often well received by my students. Job well done, my friend.

Thank you @Porthole 🍻

One could argue any photo of a wrist watch could fit this week's brief then? 🤭

I have so much random crap in this house that I must be able to find plenty of obsolete items...

I have so much random crap in this house that I must be able to find plenty of obsolete items...

But if they post lazy photos of watches with broken objects then they won’t get picked and we’ll have a very bleak thread this time next week... this is about creativity and expression.

Perhaps I can elaborate a little, I do get that watches could technically be seen as obsolete, but the theme of obsolescence is something I thought we could still drill down further in terms of the photo competition.

I like watches with scars and stories, and I’m a romantic at heart. At the same time, there is a genuine sadness when a mechanical object finally gives up the ghost, especially something as reliable and constant as a wristwatch. It might be your own, it may have belonged to a relative, almost severing the last tie you have to that person. I want to see that sadness, that pain, that despair. I want to see your anguish and your suffering. No descriptions either… that would be cheating!

Then again, I also like the thought of these things just falling foul of fashion, of usefulness, of style, of relevance. Who needs a pocket watch, and why dive in a watch, are you mad fam? There’s probably nothing sadder than seeing a 1940s waterproof watch sitting by the side of the swimming pool whilst its owner farts about in an G-Shock.

Again, I am a mood.

(Edit - just added some visual pics for the theme board. We have worn broken watches, horological viscera, old models against newer-type models, older models and executions… this isn’t necessarily the be all and end all, it’s just setting a scene for some stimulation. Have fun 😉).

Well glad to see @Porthole is a good fun mood, just think folks what it could have been if he'd been in a dark angry mood. Sounds good, I'll give it a whack, and thanks for setting this week's theme.

Honestly, @Deeperblue was worried the post would read:

"This week @Porthole has chosen the theme of 'f**k off you sh***ing w***ers'. Good luck everyone! Get snapping!" She was definitely surprised it was almost wholesome. I’d want to see what the entries would be for that, but I’m feeling a little more festive.

I’m currently sitting in a room full of Brighton fans having watched them dismantle our team and our chance of salvaging the league. Current mood: brooding…

The emjoi was for the 1st bit of your reply, not the 2nd bit, know what it's like to get busted and watch a seasons dreams dissappear (and it's tense in our house as wifey supports that dirty team from West Yorkshire, defo twitchy bum time🤣) in that light you've shown surprising restraint.

I’m not speaking to any of them - they are family, and they can (politely) do one 😂

A gooner here too my friend. Today was a shame and it’s more of a shame that those cheaters over at City will get another trophy. But we have much to be proud of and the look forward to with this team. COYG!!!

Yes… how a team can break financial fair play rules and still be allowed to remain competitive in the transfer market and not be penalised is a farce. Regardless, we have failed to capitalise on our position at the start of the year and threw valuable points away at Southampton, Liverpool, and West Ham. We looked a beaten team before todays second half.

Rare, old, mildewy books. WTF do we need smooshed up tree fibers for anymore? I mean, I have the ENTIRE MARVEL LIBRARY - tens of thousands of comic books - right here on this device!

Why my wife collects rare books is totally beyond me. She should collect useful stuff... like watches.

When I thought of this theme, it got me thinking of my past memories and also the history of one of the watch companies here in India. So keeping all this in mind, I want to make this submission

Back story –

The watch in this picture was given as a gift to me by my late grandfather who introduced me to watches when I passed my junior high and I was really overjoyed!! HMT watch as a gift defined that you are no longer a kid.

Most people outside India are probably unfamiliar with HMT watches. HMT watches were simple, durable everyday-use – watches for the common man. In 1961, HMT (Hindustan Machine Tools), in collaboration with the Citizen Watch Company of Japan, set up India’s first wristwatch manufacturing enterprise in India. Initial production runs were limited to simple hand-wound mechanical watches, followed by automatic watches, and then a line of quartz watches. The movements were mostly made in India under license from Citizen and were very similar to their Japanese equivalents.

Demand for the watches in the 1960s to the 1980s was huge, leading to waiting lists, which stretched for months. At the height of its popularity the brand was synonymous with watches in India. In 1991, HMT produced nearly seven million watches

HMT had been producing quartz watches in India since the 1970s but they were not popular at the time due to their relatively higher prices. Consequently HMT decided to continue its focus on producing more mechanical watches, not realizing that quartz technology was ahead of its time and would eventually dominate the market. Only when Titan (its rival) began to win over market share with its quartz watches did HMT realise its mistake

At the same time, the Indian economy slowly opened up to international brands as import restrictions moderated. And Indian consumers desired foreign watch brands, often shopping outside India. HMT itself was too slow to react to the changes in the Indian economy or the preferences of its customers. The government of India finally shut down HMT’s watch business in May 2016

Life after death

The fact that HMT watches were no more suddenly created demand for its timepieces among collectors, especially in India. Inventory on the company’s webstore started selling out, while online retailers and brick and mortar stores saw a surge in demand for these pieces.  the Janata that was one of the first models produced, renowned for its reliability and longevity. So when HMT decided to complete the last batch of its watches in 2016, it was immediately sold out. Finally, after 3 years in 2019 is now selling watches online using cases from old stock, handwinding movements from old stock and Miyota movements.

For the background, I have 2 things which are also on the verge of becoming obsolete and which I still absolutely can't start my morning without it. Listening to the radio and reading newspapers!

My old and my new passion. Arguably both technologies are obsolete and both have gone digital a long time ago. But while the one is brand new the other is collecting dust.

I should have submitted this second picture alongside the other. Is a second submit allowed?
