The theme will be announced in the comments below....

Good luck and have fun everyone!

Notes for Newcomers:

If you are new to this thread and enjoy photography then feel free to post your pictures! We run a fresh photography thread each week, starting on the Sunday, and have a guest judge set the theme and pick winners each week. You are welcome to post as many pictures as you wish with a connection to that weeks theme. The runners up will be mentioned in the following weeks thread and the winner gets a mention and their winning photo in the weekly newsletter.

WC admin are also working on creating an exclusive 'Winners Badge' for winners WC profile!

Okay! Now that I get to pick the theme, this week we're gonna focus on my favorite photography subject matter...

Image

Nah, just joking. This week's theme is "Sentimental Watches."

Here's mine...

Image

It's a reminder for me, every time I wear it, that even if you're ugly, you can still be loved.

The lume on that GS is just bonkers. Like a supercharged Lumibrite which in itself is nuts on regular a Seiko 5.

What is the reference?

It's the SBGC249!

You know how us enthusiasts always complain about how there's no lume on GS watches? Well, they clearly heard our complaints, because the Evolution 9 series of sports watches have tons of lume.

They're just charging us several thousand more dollars for the privilege. I guess there must be a lume shortage! Either that, or they're using a formula of lume that's 95% platinum.

·

I was gifted this Bulova Futuro for circling the sun through the universe a certain number of times. It is a very lovely watch to look at but I have trouble wearing it for very long, just loses its flavor quickly.

Draw me like one of your French watches.

They’ve got airplane light lume on the Prospex LX as well. I’m really curious how GS divers can compare to the LX.

Wouldn’t be too shocked if LX takes the crown 👑 💡. Our own version of lume wars 😉

Guess the LX in above group !

Thanks for the shout out! I'll throw this morning's pic into the "Sentimental" mix and in the spirit of "if you're not cheating you're not competing" I have made it a collage with a gratuitous nod to WC (bonus points?) It's pretty much a here and now shot of my lazy rainy morning geek fest. Sentimental because these watches have old interesting histories already while my wife and I are actively creating new ones. I'm sooo fortunate that she is game for watch gatherings so I try to keep her mix fresh and she really holds her own. These "projects" are way more enjoyable than fixing the phantom flushing toilet right? Looking forward to seeing all the WC pics. Did I win yet? I need this!

Seiko called it LX as a short form for 'lux', the measurement for intensity of light:

What are the two watches either side of the LX???

·

Congrats peoples!

Hmm. And something I can get my teeth into maybe… I am sentimental about many of my watches after all.

·

my grandfather passed away in April of 2020 at the age of 94. My grandmother had passed at 90 years old in December of 2019. As many people often say, when folks are together for very long they don't tend to wait long after the first one passes to join them. In this case it was roughly 5 months. My mother packed me a bag of some of my grandfather's things (NY Yankee stuff) that she thought I'd like to have. To my surprise there was a bag of watches at the bottom. Nothing shocking, no gold Rolexs but they are all nice to have.

Image

I've put the Benrus on blue leather and wear it occasionally.

My grandfather wasn't a watch guy, but he did always make sure he had one, a working watch was good enough, but a watch, usually a Timex on a stretch band or something could always be found on his wrist and if the battery died or it broke for some reason he never hesitated at all to have it repaired or replaced. As he got older and his dexterity would fail him he'd call me over to set the time (the more poorly made the watch the harder this is) fix the date or shorten the band if needed. As noted above, he passed during the height of Covid. I broke quarantine to go see him a couple days before he passed because we knew that his time was running short. I got there but he wasn't wearing his watch, rather it was on the dresser in his room, probably taken off by his aide or my mom so he'd be comfortable, but before I left for the night I set it for him one last time.

that watch is the Timex in the back, to the right.

·

Thought I'd pop in to see what this week's topic is.

It's too sad for me, I'll have to come back next week.

·

Thankyou for the mention, its an honour to be voted in the shortlist against some super (and cute n furry) subjects.

Sentimental watch, now I'm lucky here as I don't have a legacy piece, you know a watch that's been passed down the family as my oldies are still alive and kicking(and that's far better than any bit of metal no matter how Sentimental or historic). So mine is this, on September the 5th 1988 I started working in the power industry as an apprentice mechanical fitter. 30 years later I got a cash reward for my service and converted into this

Image

My sentimental piece, the one watch I've actually earned and one I will never part with and will pass down and hopefully be their sentimental watch to remember me by.

Rado right, US special edition Seiko Turtle on left. Pic was about 1 second exposure in pitch black room, so it looked a little different than real life. The Rado glows blue, Seiko turtle is green. Rado lasts well, seiko turtle little better, LX till next week, maybe longer than tritium 🤪

Sorry for thread hijack, I’ll get onto the sentimental shots soon!

·

Yay, thanks for the nod!

This theme is easy for me. It's the Undone Snoopy I gave my son on his 5th birthday. He began helping me do unboxing videos the year before and with great response from the #watchfam. He even made it on Hodinkee!

For sentimental watches it's pretty much these two.

The final form of my first watch build.

And the watch I built for my wife. She'll be getting a new build this year but this was the first one for her.

16 year old me's dream watch.

and the one that replaced it for a long time

and my first "high end" watch (46mm lol.. good gawd. Still looked cool though haha)

Congrats to all those selected as runners-up! You guys shared such fantastic photos! 🥳

For @HotWatchChick69's theme this week, the sentimental pieces in my collection are also the priceless and invaluable...

My Dad's dress watch he passed on to me a year before he passed away in 2020...

My grandfather passed away in 2012 at the age of 94. He wore many watches in his life (I have his Seamaster DeVille) but this Pulsar is what he wore for nearly the last thirty years of it.

Image

My other grandfather passed in 1992, at a premature 72. He had been an executive for a vending machine company. My whole early life I was awash in Coca-Cola memorabilia and clothing. This is a transistor radio from the 1960's.

·

I call most of my watches sentimental, but rather than bore you with 10 or so minor stories, I’ll just drop a few highlights.

My Grandfathers wrist watch. I know he had one before WW2, but as a captured British soldier in the Burmese jungle, he lost everything.

Being one of the few POW survivors, he eventually made it to Canada (where his wife and kids went to during the war) and was given a new watch by his company. He passed away when I was around 20, so I had 2 wonderful decades with him. A dignified, wise and strong, a true gentleman- a great example for me.

My wife watch - bought 2 years ago. I told her I like it but it’d be hard to get. She got her mom in Japan to pick it up and mail it to us secretly. Wifey could surprise me for a Christmas gift.

It’s a ‘field watch’ for hiking Fieldwalker me, its 200m for swimmer / diver me, its Ginza paving stones to take me to the little alleys we enjoyed during our life in Japan

I had all my Grandfather's (Henry Roe Cloud) pocket watches stolen 30 years ago. He had one wrist watch that disappeared before I was born. But my mother recently gave me his Zuni Coin Silver watch bracelet that was made for him that went with it. I cherish it!

This was my father's last watch my mother gave my father before he passed away 10 years ago. My mother passed away 2 years ago. It's a Croton Aquamatic Dive watch. He served in Korea and was in the Air Force. He was in his early 20s in this photo. This watch is a link to my past as now I'm the patriarch of our family name. Miss them so much ❤

Mine is not very original, just the watch my wife bought me when we got engaged 😊
