It is time.....

I've always been of the opinion that as long as I'm getting some enjoyment out of a watch, it can keep its spot in the collection, but recently, I've noticed I always seem to gravitate towards certain pieces in my collection during the morning choosing, and others I'm only wearing because I feel compelled to justify having them.

I've never sold a watch before, and I'm not looking forward to it, but I also have a big purchase on the horizon that I need to raise funds for, so some of these are going to have to go.

So, my Sunday is going to involve a mammoth photography and description writing session so that the watches I decide are no longer pulling their weight can be put on eBay on the next reduced fees weekend.

I need to be brutal, so every watch (other than gifts, they are too precious) is on the chopping block and is really going to have to spark some serious joy to retain its place.

I need some emotional support in this, otherwise I'm just going to be like...

Image

... zero decisions will be made and I'll just go buy another watch box.

Which of your watches is up for eviction?

Anyone else struggle with the selling process?

What helps you make the decision???

It’s like a breakup. One day you look over at your watch box and you just know. Every moment past that you are living a lie.

It's reassuring to know that someone else out there understands my situation!

There's a school of thought about taking all the watches you don't love any more, hiding them away for 6 months and seeing if you miss them.

I'm not sure that's for me though. It'd just feel like an excuse to be lazy and not make a decision. 🤦‍♀

I think it just has to be a swift departure. Don't prolong the suffering.

I’ve never sold a watch but not against it in the future. I think if you haven’t worn a watch in a certain period of time, then it’s on the block unless it has some significance or sentimental value, or a piece that only comes out in special occasions (ie, I have a black Seiko Cocktail time that I only wear to black tie events). Check your #wruw and you’ll know what you gravitate towards and what can be culled.

There are a few unwanted ones in my boxes but they’re not worth much and that’s my excuse as to why I haven’t yet.

I'm not great at keeping up with my WRUW posts .... that would have been very helpful though 🤦‍♀

I think once I sell my first 1 or 2 watches I'll be more confident with the process, but my biggest concern is the watch reaching the buyer and not working... which is possible with some of my vintage pieces.

I'll be packaging +++

Yep... Very few of mine are worth big bucks, but added together it would be quite a nice sum of money in the watch kitty.

All these little purchases have added up for me 😬

I thought I’d be one of those who’d never sell a watch. However, I just sold 2 last week on eBay.

It was the 2 Swiss who got the chop:

1. I have decided to focus my collection on German brands, and so they didn’t really fit;

2. The Tudor 1926, when I was honest with myself, was too big on my wrist, the bracelet never fit me properly and was worth a fair bit; and

3. The Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic I liked, but didn’t love. Also, it used to be my lucky watch at games, but it ran out of luck and I got a new colour appropriate game day watch anyway!

I shared the concern about selling and the buyer not being happy. I dealt with this by being uber honest about scratches etc and discounting appropriately.

Good luck!

I've never sold a watch before. At the moment I don't think I will be able too.

Yes, I think you're spot on about documenting all scratches as much as I possibly can.

Currently in the photography process as we speak.... They all look so nice in a good photo though! This is going to be tough ...

·

Can't help you here...I've never "sold" a watch...some I've parted with by gifting them...others I have let my friends have for exactly what I paid for them when they desperately want something from the collection that I'm willing to part with.

At the end of the day...they are just watches...material possessions that you can't take with you...so no point in holding onto them too tightly.

I’ve also bought a few on eBay recently. It puts me off massively when:

1. The photos are poor;

2. It is not immediately clear when the watch was purchased; and

3. It is not clear whether the seller is the original purchaser of the watch, or has themselves bought pre-owned.

I’m currently trying to sell my Hamilton Khaki field mechanical white dial watch. I bought it because I needed a GADA watch, something so wear that’s durable and fits into every situation. When it arrived I liked it a lot but from the first day I had this kind of subliminal feeling that something was off. I wore it very rarely, I basically did not connect with the watch. So in order to get money for a substitute I decided to put it on eBay.. sad times.

I really don’t regret buying it, as I really wanted to try it out, but it just didn’t work out. :/

I know. You're right.

I'm trying to be of the view that I've had my time with them and now I should pass them on to someone else to enjoy.

Your decision is made by what you no longer love . No regrets , Ive given away more than I have sold and none of them come into the last box you ever lay in so that’s my reasoning and puts me into proper perspective.

Thank you. This is really helpful to know.

I'm debating whether to do movement shots with the case back off, or just do that if asked.

I'm being lazy, but I'm also paranoid I'll somehow break it when the backs off 😆

After 40 years the box is loooong gone I'm afraid.

Ha! ok, well let me know when you are ready and done with your photos etc. This one is on my list, looked at it over the weekend in the shop (the update), so this could be a serendipitous opportunity potentially, I know this must be a set of difficult steps and decisions to make about your collection, cant promise anything, but would be interested when you come to list

Nice collection even if they aren’t in the luxury class

Thank you 👍

I consider all my watches luxuries!

·

Trying to sell my Rado Captain Cook ceramic….😕. My process is drawing up list of pro/con to decide who goes.

Image

Pro:

  • both wifey and daughter love it,

  • it gets more random muggle compliments than anything

  • ceramic is as amazing as you’ve heard

Con:

  • Financially stretched at the mo’

  • Have too many watches with no date, I need a date!

  • Slightly too big for me (5.9 wrist) divers is currently 90% of my collection, need a cull

… anyway, it’s a bit of a tortured process deciding, and of my previous sales I’m 50/50 about regret 😂

·

I have a grey dial DateJust that my uncle bought for me when I was 18. I have probably worn it fewer times than years I’ve owned it (32). I couldn’t bring myself sell it so last month I ordered a jazzy blue gator strap from Jean Rousseau in the hope that it changes everything. Only 2 more months to wait u tip it arrives!

·

I've been collecting for 4 1/2 years, and have never sold anything, but finally did my first trade a couple of weeks ago. It was a tiny bit difficult taking that initial first step, but having done so I'm now prepared to part with several others as well. Best of luck with your culling.

·

It's invigorating once you have them listed. I don't do auctions unless I have an item that is so popular it will sell for more than I normally would sell it for. I usually just do a set buy it now price with "Make an Offer" So once a watch is listed. I pack it up and get it ready to be shipped. I try and let as many of my friends have first dibs. So you should share your listing links.

I'm in a bit of a holding pattern for buying anything new right now. I've been going through my collection and sending all my vintage watches to The Watch Spa to get photographed and serviced.

Sometimes it can be hard to let one go, but like you I find myself wearing a watch just to breath life back into it to convince myself I still like it. That's when I know it's time to let someone else enjoy it. This is why I always save all packaging. Buyers want the full meal deal if possible and your watch will sell better!

Great collection!

·

Yeah man, the struggle is real. I do tend to hold onto the ones I don't love for too long. But don't sell them on eBay, they take too much of your money. Go for reddit or watchuseek.

·

Hi Kaysia,

If it makes you feel any better I’ve bought and sold hundreds of watches over the years and while I do regret the selling of some, I’ve never looked back.

I figure it’s all part of my watch collecting journey, how else could I afford to have so many different brands and styles of watches, well unless I were a millionaire, then money wouldn’t be an issue.

If you have to um and arr about whether you love or like a watch enough anymore to keep it in your collection, then it’s probably a good indication that you should let it go to someone else who will appreciate it and possibly wear it everyday.

I used to think I would keep every watch I purchased, that after searching and waiting for a particular one to come up that there would be no way I would ever let it go, how wrong I was. They are just watches after all and there are so many more that I want to experience before I leave this world.

So unless they have sentimental value, just enjoy them and then let them go.

Good luck with your sales and your journey 🙏🏻

·

If you want help on how what photos to take, etc for eBay then give me a shout.

As for what in my collection I'd be tempted to sell, it's mostly the stuff I loved once but now feel guilty for not wearing very often if at all. There's not many in this category but this one is:-

Image

I wore it a lot at first but now it just doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Could I actually let it go though... hmm. Probably not. 🤔😬

Haven't seen much of you recently! Have you come for a second crack at the 1WC? 😁

As I think someone has mentioned, it's the ones I'd struggle to replace which are the hardest to part with. Given that a lot of my collection is vintage it would be difficult to replace a lot of it!

·

I just sold 6 mid tier watches to purchase a new Tudor BB Pro. If you aren’t wearing them anymore sell them to get something you like.

I’ve been laying low you might say due to medical issues and work related problems.

Suffice to say I’ve just been lurking in the shadows throwing a comment in here and there when I get the opportunity.

I did see Greg’s post about the new 1WC but I don’t think I could commit at this point, still to much BS going on unfortunately. It is a shame though, I have the perfect watch for the challenge 😉anyway hopefully there’s a next time.

As for your watch culling venture, just be very honest with yourself and try and stay objective about it, focus on your end goal, which is to get that new special piece, that will make letting go of some of your current pieces so much easier. 😘

·

Damn that's a shame I think I couldn't be in your position :( I wouldn't sell anything if it brings me sorrow, I would just wait more to buy the more expensive one.

But, of course, choice is yours, we feel you.

·

I have mastered Marie Condoing THE HELL outta my stuff. I can let go of literally anything. I remember I have thrown away the card my friend made me by hand for my 25th birthday, just because i thought that we're not gonna speak ever again (she's my wife now and she was really upset with my decluttering decision). I'm a marketplace surfer, charity shop warrior and second-hand aficionado. I'm getting most of my clothes from marketplaces, most of my studio equipment is from marketplaces and I'm not gonna stop anytime soon. Credit score? Social credit? Leave me alone, my marketplace reputation points are popping!

I don't have things, those are ASSETS. You better spark some joy, or you know that I'm coming for ya with this camera app wide open. The only thing that stops me from selling some stuff right now is that it takes a lot of time to write a meaningful description! You walk into delivery company office to pick up some stuff - they ask your for your ID. I walk into their office - they offer me champagne. My favourite band? Parcels! I took a photo of a cat on the street and made profit. They call me Second Midas, because my second-hand makes gold.

I can tell when I fell out of love with something and when I got this feeling it means it's time to make some listings. Key is to not overthink this and to start selling asap, because the more you wait, the less chance you gonna let go. I don't have any watches on a chopping block right now, I've already pushed all watches I don't like and I'm focused on getting some new fun straps for watches I already have. Just ordered a couple of cheap 5$ leather straps to test the different colours (purple, burgundy and also a default chocolate, because I don't have 20mm brown leather strap), but I have a couple of guitar pedals, some consumer electronics and an old laptop to move.
