Help with Rolex 14060m "Laser Etched Crown"

Hello all, I recently picked up a 2010 Rolex Submariner 14060m and the constant smudging of the dial and the lack of laser etched crown is giving me pause.

I've done some research but can't find any definitive answer on whether this 2010 model is suppose to have a laser etched crown.

Does anyone know?

It should have the lasered crown as far as I know. I know some watches got it earlier than others but your watch is well past when this was introduced as a feature.

It may not be at the 6 position if the crystal was inserted crookedly and it is a b!tch to find sometimes.

But what do you mean with constant smudging? On the dial or crystal?! Anyway, take it to a Rolex authorised shop with a watch maker on site and you will know.

Thanks. After many attempts and playing with lighting, I believe I faintly see it. I think I'll take it down to the AD to check it out to be sure though.

As for the smudging, the watch appears to be a smudge magnet. I feel that even after I clean it, smudges somehow work themselves onto the watch. I know it's a black dial, so it's prone to more smudging but this seems excessive compared to other black dial watches I have.

They began laser etching all their watches in the early naughts, so yours should definitely have it. If you have a modern phone, you should be able to zoom really close at almost eye level from the 6 o鈥檆lock position. Try a flashlight off the crystal. This may help:

I wouldn't be too worried about that. Some of my watches are also greasy 5 mins after I wash them 馃え it's like they are playing games with me.

Bring it down to the dealer, let them have a look (and maybe do a pressure test as well which is often very cheap if not free), clean the watch with a soft brush and some soap, enjoy.

Agreed, it should have the crown etched from what I recall about when they began using them. I'm also confused about the smudging. Is it the bracelet/case or dial? I haven't ever noticed a smudging issue on my Sub Date. Is your skin oily? Are you able to clean it so that it's smudge free or is it not wiping clean?

I finally found it! That thing was downright nearly impossible to spot. I spent nearly 30 mins looking and finally after watching the video @AllTheWatches linked, I found it.

The smudging though is a bit of a let down. It seems to smudge easily. I don't have oily skin and I'm thinking since the dial is black, it's very noticeable. I don't see this with my Polar 16570 (granted it's white), or my Datejust 16220 (it's silver), or even my SKX007 (it's very old). The dial crystal appears inferior to the the other watches I have but the dial is amazing despite the crystal.

Like you mentioned, maybe I'm not wiping it correctly. I'll try it again and monitor.

That's a good point. I hadn't considered having it pressured tested. I'll swing by the AD tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice.

It鈥檚 one of those things you find once, you always know where to look.

Don't get too hung up on the smudging. Especially since you know it's occuring on all your watches. I never even notice on mine. Keep a microfiber handy and enjoy your new Sub!

My explorer has the same smudge and fingerprint problem but thats normal tbh. Just wipe it with your shirt or tissue when it bothers you
