Islander Abalone ‘Monster’ Review

From the time we are tots, many of us learn stories of wizards, enchanted forests and magical powers conjured from a carved willow wand.  As we grow, we long for the supernatural to be part of our mundane and often boring lives. Every once in a while, though, something comes along to fill that wanton void.

Image

Long Island Watch waved its willow wand and conjured my new ISL-141. With its wonderful abalone dial, great magical elm tree heft, and fantastical orange accents…it speaks volumes of happy tales and enchanted exploits while taking it out into the vexed woods, Siren-singing sea, or to dinner at Denny’s for a blessed Moons Over my Hammy.

Image

The ISL-141 design has magic ingredients sprinkled into its steel cauldron that make the watch a joy to wear:

  • Movement: NH35 Automatic (self-winding, hand wind, hacks)
  • Case: Stainless steel, 42mm x 13mm thick. 47mm tip to tip (brushed and polished)
  • Back: Engraved screw-in
  • Crystal: Anti-Reflective Double-Dome Sapphire
  • Band: Bracelet with all solid links, milled Deployant clasp, 20mm
  • Water Resistant: 200 meters
  • Weight: 198 grams
  • Accuracy: + 4 seconds/day

The ISL-141 looks and feels like a Titan, and is excellent value-for-money. Somehow Long Island Watch was able to cast a spell and deliver it to me for $304.65. That is less than half I would pay for a Seiko Monster. Plus, the Abalone dial is a gorgeous exclusive to this watch that elevates it to a sparkling crescendo of personal satisfaction!

  • Excellent quality for price
  • Wears flat on wrist and not too large
  • Gorgeous and captivating dial
  • Bezel’s action is light and too easy to turn
  • Though solid as a rock, its 198 grams is a bit too hefty

Nice dail! #seiko

Yeah I love it!

Fun watch, good price, but I would have to get it off the bracelet to get that 198g down to something more reasonable.

I was thinking that…but the bracelet looks so good with the watch that I hesitate.

Looks great. I find myself more confused than ever as to why Seiko can’t deliver better specs on their watches. They would have charged $750 for this and it would have a hardlex crystal and cheap bracelet.

·

Nice review. I was surprised how much I like mine. It wears quite comfortably even with its substantial weight.

·

Thats really nice, the abalone adds a great touch.

Beautiful watch!!!

That is so true. I bought my son a Jade Monster and yeah…Hardlex.

Seiko has reached fan boy status like Apple has.

If people buy it just because of the name on it, why try harder than necessary?

That looks a banger of a watch & if I wasn't replacing a hot water heater this week...

Oh and not in the dog house.

Oh no! I had to replace my water heater last year. That is NOT good! 😩

Yeah, but once you get that hot water heater in you'll be out of the dog house so...

Especially since we are going tankless.

I have a Planet Ocean. On the bracelet sized for my 6.75” wrist, it’s 206g. It’s fine some days, but more often it’s bulky and uncomfortable. On the Omega rubber strap, it’s 138g. This is much more pleasant, bordering on “you forget you have it on” (not quite) and that’s where it spends most of its time.

Just got mine shipped in last week. Built like a brick sh*thouse and oozes quality. The bezel action is butter smooth, and the bracelet is very nice as well. It's definitely a statement piece!
