Invicta Stormtrooper Automatic Review

If in the Star Wars Universe I was a veteran Stormtrooper, Marmite sandwiches existed, and I was offered one for chow…I’d willingly accept. To me, the fabulous yeast spread Marmite is a savory and umami treat.

So when I was in San Juan, PR a few weeks ago, I wandered into an Invicta store full of its quintessential Marmite brand of watches. Like Marmite sandwiches, you either love ‘em or hate ‘em.

The store had on display a few Storm Trooper watches, as it was May 4th a couple of days earlier.

Right away, the NH35-driven automatic model (40359) caught my eye with its detailed textured Stormtrooper helmet on the dial, a very readable date window (I like date windows), raised markers, a flattering hand-set, a large, ratcheting bezel, and stark monochrome elements indicative of the Imperial Zeitgeist. Plus, it is number 189 of a limited run of 1977 watches.

The watch enjoys premium details like the Imperial insignia etched on the crown,

a signed buckle that securely fits a soft and pliable 26mm silicone strap,

and Invicta’s name etched on the other side of the case (another Marmite element indeed!).

Dimensions range from generous to whopping, as the case measures 52mm and the watch itself weighs 232 grams. That may weigh even more than an Imperial Utility droid!

Image

The watch is rated at 100m water resist, and it hides within its generous case the Tie Fighter of movements — a Seiko NH35.

I’m sure you’re asking, “That’s all academic…but how does it wear?” Well, despite it droid weight and Star Destroyer size, it wraps around my 7.25” wrist snugly, is incredibly comfortable because of its super-soft strap, and I think looks just plain dapper.

One of my favorite features of the watch is its excellent ratcheting bezel. It has one of the nicest clicking actions I’ve experienced with no back-play. Plus, like the case, the bezel feels as solid as an AT AT Walker.

I’m quite happy with this monochrome spectacle, and proudly welcome its savory offering into my watch collection.

  • Fantastic ratcheting bezel
  • Incredibly-detailed dial
  • Generous date window
  • Solid performing movement
  • Premium construction
  • Though thoughtful and complementary, the handset could be larger to better fill the dial
  • My 7.25” wrist barely gets away with wearing this size of watch
  • The lume is just average
