Thrice Vexed. A Quandary to Beset My Simple Mind.

One blustery morning fraught with the agitated winds of time, I knelt prostrate upon the mainspring alter of the watch gods to appeal to their advice…that I knew they would respond to with generous, but commanding and scathing response. My shaking hands held high above my beaded brow while my voice boomed the question, ‘Oh Time gods of the Horo-sphere, do you think the Ironman Shock properly rivals the venerable, but timelessly-mighty G-Shock square?’ A great and earth-shattering voice boomed out of the gloriously colored haze before me, ‘Go my simpleton. Wander into the wilderness and ask someone who may give a sh**t.’

So here I come to you my WC chaps to ask that very thing which one of you may think is the Cat‘s Meow?

I’ve got here my 1989 G-Shock Screwback, My Metal Square that’s all dolled up with blue tooth and shiny bits and things, and my Timex Ironman Shock that I bought a couple of weeks ago.

I’ll compare 11 features between the three (2 being great and 0 not as good).

G-Shock Square I bought in 1989:

Image
  1. Rugged — 2

  2. Nice looking — 1

  3. Bright display — 2

  4. Good backlight — 0

  5. Longevity if cared for — 2

  6. Feature rich — 1 (has dual time and a blinking ”reminder” feature you can turn on like a string tied around your finger).

  7. Timeless — 2

  8. Sentimental value — 2

  9. Happy factor when I wear it — 2

  10.  Battery life — 2

  11. Accuracy — 1 (It is 33 years old after all).

TOTAL = 17

G-Shock Metal Square I bought in 2021:

Image
  1. Rugged — 1 (I’m afraid to damage the case).

  2. Nice looking — 2 (It’s ballers!)

  3. Bright display — 2

  4. Good backlight — 2

  5. Longevity if cared for — 2

  6. Feature rich — 2 (five alarms/snooze, reminders that scroll in the display box that are entered via bluetooth, phone finder function, multi band 6, world time).

  7. Timeless — 1.5

  8.  Sentimental value — 1

  9. Happy factor when I wear it — 1.5

  10. Battery life — 2

  11. Accuracy — 2 (so accurate that it’s endorsed by the time gods themselves).

TOTAL = 19

Timex Ironman Shock I just bought:

Image
  1. Rugged — 2

  2. Nice looking — 1.7 (it would definitely score a few dates).

  3. Bright display — 2

  4. Good backlight — 2 (Indiglo need I say?)

  5. Longevity if cared for — 2

  6. Feature rich — 1.7 (Indiglo stays on while working different complications, 30 lap memory, dual time, alarm sounds a second time after five minutes to make sure you get your keister out of bed).

  7. Timeless — 2 (The Ironman’s been around almost as long as the G-Shock).

  8. Sentimental value — 1.7

  9. Happy factor when I wear it — 2

  10. Battery life — 1.5 (you’re looking more like 5 years instead of the G-Shock’s ten).

  11. Accuracy — 1.3. (it loses about 2 seconds a week).

TOTAL = 19.9

I feel like I’m stepping out on my old square when I strap on the Ironman. I guess I just have to come clean with the three of them and let each of them know that they have their own special trait we can celebrate together during our one-on one special time.

What do you guys think? What floats your boat more? What whispers the sweetest things in your ears?

I have always been more of a Timex fan; I could never really "get" the appeal of either Casio, or the G-Shock.

interesting that your newest watch has the highest score and the oldest has the lowest....maybe re rank them in a couple years?

I just went through this same crisis. I bought a Timex digital Expedition however. I like the indiglo and the fact it stays on while changing menus. Buttons are better and more accessible too. So from a practical and ergonomic point of view, Id have to agree Timex wins.

That said, I am a Casio fan boy, and in the looks and fashion department Casio has everyone beat handidly with their GShock lineups. They are spectacular IMHO. So for that reason alone I wear my Casios more than anything when Im doing outdoor/active things.

My advise...Do not fret upon quests that are indeed a fools errand. Hence forth, take thy time keepers and revel in their individual glory for they are all worthy opponents, ticking as the universe's hammer builds the infinite folds of the galaxies and stars. Do not be swayed by the false Casio and Timex gods who would have you think they are the sole gatekeepers of time. Enjoy them instead as the servants they are to your journey, scale down the mountain of horology and look up instead with heart in hand and proclaim: "I spend too much f@$#ing time playing with watches!" and be free of your wretched chains.

I think I’m going that way with my new Shock.

I have a GA-B2100 I never wear, I choose my Ironman over it every time.

The Casio has more features, but it just doesn't feel right on my wrist.

I do not like the look of the ironman series. I’d wear that metal G-Shock a lot, I wouldn’t have any qualms beating it up. I think The metal is totally rugged, you just gotta live with a few scratches.

I did a comparison of my own a while ago. Here are my results.

1993 and still going

I've only had this one for a year, so just breaking it in

Image

I've wore this one for 7 years 24/7 only issue has been strap replacement

Both Timex and Casio make absolutely amazing work horses that you'll be hard pressed to kill.

Take your works of Satan and  sellest them and take thine moneys and buy a fatted calf and go to the temple of the Swiss and slaughter the calf and your first born upon the altar of the AD and say unto the seraph take my offerings and my soul for erternal servitude to the god of the rolex and the seraph shalt  say unto you  your offering has pleased thine God but remember thy whilst not get your reward on this earthly realm but your great great grandchild 'might' get the call... And the angel descended on the Abra-watch nerd and said, “thou hast shown thy devotion to the time gods by being at the ready to sacrifice your first born Timex. Go in peace…for your test has been satisfied.”
