The Flashback — a new take on the Armitron Ridgemont

I’ve long been a fan of the analog/digital rectangular watch…that in the 80’s would be widely-worn by teenagers like my buds and me, as well as up-and-coming yuppies to complement their BMW 318’s or SAAB 900’s and Motorola brick phones.

So it was a few months back, when I bought my son a silver stainless and blue dial Armitron Ridgemont as a gift, I knew eventually I would cave and get one of my own.

Johnny Wujek was Katy Perry’s designer before he chose to expand his horizons into other creative endeavors. One of his pursuits is his design collaboration with Armitron using several new and existing models. Of these models includes three distinct Ridgemont designs…including my new Flashback I received today!

Like the Jewel Beetle, the Flashback’s all stainless steel case refracts iridescent colors, while its exhibition dial allows full-view of its movement. Additionally, its stainless steel black 18mm mesh strap wraps comfortably around the wrist — locked tightly by a signed clasp.

The case back enjoys a beefy brushed finish that has engraved the Designer’s pun-like moniker — a crab that warns ‘watch out’.

Dimensions are key to a great wearing watch. Weighing-in at 87 grams, this watch enjoys a 39mm length, 33mm width, and 11mm depth. I believe this Ridgemont variant looks right at home on my 7.25” wrist; and it is 50m water resistant…so I could even fall in the pool with it if I so clumsily found myself doing so.

The EL backlit digital display, in addition to timekeeping mode, also has a stopwatch, alarm with snooze, and hourly chime!

I took advantage of the Memorial Day sale and got mine for $69.00. To me…that’s a bargain for the Flashback’s vintage design, high build quality, and the design flair Johnny Wujek gave it.

I’ve been looking at this watch. The only video I had showed the seconds hand going counter clockwise, is that a thing?

My seconds hand moves as it should. In addition, I’m blown away by the build quality and finish.

The lack of synchronization between the analog and digital clocks would drive my OCD totally nuts.

It’s easy to sync. And once done it doesn’t deviate. Though I suppose they do it that way to accommodate those who want dual time.

I prefer the setup on my Citizen Skyhawk. The digital module drives the analog hands. As a result they’re always perfectly synchronized.

I hear ya. That was a selling point when I bought my Navihawk.

I just recently got myself the blue dial Ridgemont and I am absolutely in love with it. It takes on various straps incredibly well. It is surprisingly well finished too for how little it costs. And while it hurts this Casio fanboy to say this, the Ridgemont far exceeds the quality of its closest Casio counterpart, the AQ-230.

This collab looks amazing and I am rather tempted by it. I’m just not sure how well I can pull off an iridiscent watch so I am more likely to pick up the lavander/chocolate colorway.

Great post! Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I almost picked the chocolate because I think that and its lavender dial are amazing. This one I picked for the mesh steel bracelet. It gives it a unique profile.
