The Bezel. What Kind Lures You When You Buy a Watch?

We are able to stroll to the candy vending machine or Orange Julius stand because we have knees. And a watch is able to keep its crystal in place because it has a bezel.

But unlike our knotty and sometimes shabby knees, bezels are often adorned with timing markers, tachymeters, decorative fluting, or are polished mirror-smooth.

In addition to the bezel’s chief purpose of securing the crystal, it strikes a dimension to the watch that instantly places the timepiece into one of several design genres.

Whether engraved, replete with numbers and figures, coin-edged, or smooth as glass…the bezel is an integral part of any watch.

I can’t imagine a watch without some kind of bezel. As I looked over my collection this morning, I realized how much influence the bezel design on each of my watches influenced my decision to buy it.

What bezel design is your favorite and why? Show us your example.

On a diver, I like a bezel with clear numbers, preferably matte finished, with a grippy but low profile edge. Precise and easy to turn with deliberate effort. This one is about perfect.

on a field or pilot watch, I just want it to stay out of the way and not bring attention to itself. Like this.

Everything else is on a case by case basis. Most of the time I’m not too concerned about the bezel, unless it’s being obnoxious.

So, perhaps sheer utility is what you seek in a bezel?

·

That is pretty sweet.

·

This one is perfect in looks and action, but I would prefer 120 clicks.

I do like brushed stainless bezels too.

The latter makes the watch look robust.

For a long time, I just thought fluted bezels were too flashy for me.  I'm changing my mind on that to a degree, but don't own anything with one.  Another type I haven't liked in the past is stainless steel on a steel watch.  Having both the same color just rubbed me wrong.  For some reason, I didn't mind it on the BB Pro, and since that's come out I'm beginning to see the charm of it on other watches.

Watch collecting is a funny thing.  The more I see, the less I dislike.  There are any number of types of watch or watch "features" that I didn't used to like and am now starting to enjoy.  In a world of limited resources, I'm not sure that's a good thing.

It is liberating to broaden one’s horizons regarding the many varied watch designs.

What kind lures me in?

Mostly metal...

·

My favourite is an internal rotating bezel, then a divers bezel with 15, 30, 45 markings, or a divers bezel with "bund" or "militare" marking....... but basically any divers bezel is where I'm at.
