Día de los Muertos - are you ready to celebrate...

Día de los Muertos is a fascinating cultural event taking place from November 1st to November 2nd. It originated in Mexico and is familiar to those living in the Southwestern USA due to so many Mexican families who live there and the proximity to Mexico.

Popularized by Disney with its playful and tender animated film Coco. Definitely worth a viewing.

Here are some watches in my collection inspired by the sugar skulls that are a popular fixture in the Día de los Muertos celebrations...

From Alexander Shorokhoff...inspired by Frida Kahlo

My wife would be the first one to point out that I don't need any more watches with skulls on them 🤣

She hasn't seen the NATOs yet...

And she absolutely does not like this from my guitar collection...

It's name is Mil Oraciones (1,000 Prayers) and was built by Shane Speal as an Altar Guitar for Día de los Muertos

Whoa, I don’t know how I missed this a few days ago. All amazing, especially the Bomberg. That guitar is just insane, I don’t have words. Have you every played it or is this just a collection piece?

Thanks for the kind words! 🍻

Yes - I've played it but you have to be careful what you are wearing because it has a tendency to snag your shirt if you have long sleeves. Also, Shane was a little rough with the finishing and the electrical connections need a look-in. Next time my guitar tech is around I'm going to have him clean up the connections.

It's a fun guitar and has a pretty decent sound, but more of an art piece really.

If you like unusual guitars, make sure to check out Shane Speal's website. He has been a big proponent of cigar box guitars - I've picked up several from him over the years. He also has a load of great videos on playing in open tunings and some really cool blues riffs/Americana type stuff.

He does have some cool cigar box ones. Never heard of him but I’ll have to dive into the YT stuff.

I could see getting cut on that horseshoe trying to play for sure. Looks really cool though. I’d like to get into playing more blues. Wifey picked me up a Taylor for 40th and it makes everything waaaaay smoother.

Congrats! Taylors are awesome - I love mine. They play incredibly well and sound amazing.

I just discovered an Undone Calavera Neon for sale on our local watch forum. It really appeals to me, so even though I can only see myself wearing it for a couple of days each year, I'm thinking of buying it. What's your opinion of it - is it worthwhile getting?

It definitely has limited use. It's a fun watch and well made. If I had the chance to purchase it again - I think I would pass. Just being honest. Nothing wrong with it technically, I just really don't see myself wearing very often.

It featured in my first post on the Crunch:

Also, I think I would conclude the same with about 50% of the watches I have purchased from Undone. I have picked up a few of them early on more on impulse. But definitely have buyers remorse since I find them a little too kitchsy for my taste.

Here's what I have from Undone and I'll split them into the Keepers and Weepers...

Thanks for the reply - greatly appreciated!

I'm having mixed thoughts about the Calavera Neon. I've been considering it knowing full well that I'd probably only wear it once a year. That doesn't really bother me,  but I can't decide whether or not I think its cool or kitschy. The 16 year old me would have loved that Batman watch, but the current me would definitely place it in the kitschy column, and I'm starting to lean that same way on the Calavera Neon, especially after you used that same word to describe what I had been thinking.
