Magnetic attraction and military compasses

Awakening to a slightly overcast sky and having nothing better to do, I decided to check the magnetization of my Lorier Safari before winding it.

Just for the fun of having something new to photograph, I decided to pull out my vintage mil compass, which works perfectly well despite being older than me. The beta lights are all gone and it has this look of a tool well used and well cared for, that I like so much.

The Lorier is fine, which is what I thought as it keeps time well, but checking doesn't cost me any money and having it near the old mil compass makes me appreciate the pairing of a true vintage with a recreated one. I think that Lorier managed to pull it off because the Safari doesn't look out of place when it's placed alongside a true military compass.

Military mil compasses are different from the one used by civilians, first because they are using mil instead of degrees. A mil is 1/6400 of a circle circumference and it's very useful for estimating distances and ranging artillery because it's the angle at which you see an item that is 1m tall from a distance of 1km. This specific compass was manufactured by Stanley of London, probably during WW2 or the decade that followed it, and according to the engraving scratched on its bottom it was used by a mortar battery.

I used compasses that were almost identical when I was in the army in the late 70's and I'm sure that the US army probably had similar mil compasses during the Korea and Vietnam wars because they are very precise and useful for all kind of stuff that soldiers do in the field. Using one for checking a watch magnetization is probably an overkill but it did prompt me to take some interesting photos.

I was finally able to get some decent photos of the Lorier's blued hands with the copper dial background, so I'm rather pleased with myself today.

That is a wonderful looking watch 🤩 I see you are rolling with a D20 there. D&D nerd?

Thats a really good looking watch. I see you said the dial was copper, but I always thought it was a salmon dial. Good to know. Enjoy!

I'm a nerd but not a D&D nerd. I borrowed them from the GF stash to use as props.

It's really copper and it has fine concentric brushings.

Great little piece of history I didn’t know ! Thanks for the great photos of a nice watch and old compass !

Very beuatiful watch with an interesting story, thank you for your contribution 🫡. I am truely loving the contrast of the copper dial against the blue hands its so vibrant and fresh. The dial layout of the numerals and indicies kind off reminds me of older explorers. Overall a very beautiful and classy watch.

Beautiful watch, beautiful content!

I own the Safari with the white dial and it is gorgeous. But to be honest, it was kinda a "second choice" situation due to the fact that the (in my opinion far more stunning) copper version was already sold out.

Haven’t seen a prismatic compass for years… 👌

What a beautiful watch! The color of the dial, the color of the hands, the font used for the numbers... It all adds up to a winning combination!

It has a very retro art deco vibe and when I reviewed it I kept referring  that it would be just natural in the setting of the the city of Rapture from the Bioshock game.

The color of the hands are what frustrated me the most because it was a long battle before I managed to capture their color on camera.

Your photos are far superior to those on Lorier's site, where the hand color appears black, and the dial color appears slightly different (not as appealing as the color in your photos). You did an excellent job of showing off just how beautiful your watch is. I am envious!😍

You can check my previous post or even the photos I took for the review and you'll see that I often complained that it's impossible to capture both the copper tone of the watch and the blued hands simultaneously. Somehow I managed to do it today, but I have no idea what I did right this time.
