Going to the mass, the 62MAS.

When I reviewed the San Martin SN007-G-X I commented about how good the dial is on their 37mm 62MAS re-creation, even when I compared it to the one on my SPB147. This San Martin is really able to hold its own on this front, even when it's facing Seiko, which is arguably one of the industry leaders in this subject.

Their FKM rubber waffle strap is also way better, once you get used to the slightly odd feeling of rubber yet not really rubber given by FKM. The buckle is nicely finished in satin brushing and it has polished chamfers on the sides. It's also signed and the tongue fits well in its groove. It's really a nice and well made buckle. The strap itself has a shark stamped in a roundel at the end, and  the SM hexagonal logo is stamped on the inside. When I got my SN007 it came with the standard sturdy and thick steel bracelet with the long milled clasp, all of which looked high quality, and completely wrong for a 62MAS re-creation.

So I tried to use the rubber strap from my SPB147 and it was a disaster. I didn't mind the feeling of the strap, which is probably made from the standard silicone lint trap material, but the clasp and keeper...Oy vey. That pushed me to order the SM strap because in all probability it would be better than the one from Seiko.

And it is, undeniably so. It's not as soft as silicone but it's soft enough and the buckle and keepers are not digging into my wrist like they did with the Seiko strap.

I see the SM logo on the inside of the strap will leave a nice little SM inprint on the skin once the watch comes off.

Bah, it's not any different or worse than having an impression of a case back or any other inner strap texture.

I love the look of 62MAS divers but the one I tried was always uncomfortable to me no matter what strap I used. Maybe Ill retry one day with the SM strap.

Which one did you try?

I dont have this model, but I do have a couple of San Martin's and I am really impressed by the quality they have been putting out lately. Way above the price point. In terms of fit and finish definitely some of the best value out there.

I owned a Chinese homage and also tried the SPB143 and similar in store various times. Just found them too top heavy, not as balanced as other divers.

I'm aware of this problem with the SPB as I own a SPB147 myself. The SM is thinner and wears better.

I own another SM, the absolutely not 36mm Explorer SN021-G, and the finish and quality of the SN007 is far superior.
