Thoughts on homage watches.

Today I stumbled across this Sugess watch that pays obvious homage to the Rolex Daytona. And while I myself am not usually a fan of watches that are so directly modeled after another watch, a fully automatic chronograph with a design I love and (from what I understand) decent build quality for a little under $375... when the Daytona is upwards of 35k for some variations...It really does tempt me. This prompted me to wonder what you all think in regards to homage watches. Feel free comment your feelings on the matter.

good artists copy; great artists steal

Some people are content with the styling and not the branding. I feel that both should be copied.

I like homage watches, but I'm not into direct copies... It doesn't hurt that the designs copied are usually not to my taste anyway.

As long as they're not outright fakes I'm good with them.

Rolex,Seiko,Hamilton and Omega don't seem to be too put out by the Steeldives and San Martins  of the world,so why should I?

After giving up on Rolex and all their AD games, I have learned of and now LOVE homage watches.  I understand others opinions.  But it was Rolex and the AD games that drove me into homage watches.  Now I have at least 6 Pagani Designs, 5 of Rolex watches that combined saved me about as much as a BMW 5 series.  I’ll never buy a Rolex.  That’s not Paganis fault.  It is directly the fault of Rolex and their ADs games.

Back in the 2000s when I first started looking at watches and saw a Seiko S KX as a non-watch person , I thought, "that's a cheap looking pretend-Rolex". Sentiment still remains today - as that initial impression was so genuine.

Nice business strategy, just not my thing.

Not much different from a  girl buying a LV-lookalike bag. It's not a crime and some people are happy with it. And the girls laugh about it with their friends.

I don't personally want to buy most homage watches because I know when someone asks if it's "the watch" and I have to respond back "No it's a cheaper homage to the watch" it's just a situation I don't want to be in.

BUT I say more power to the homage brands. They keep the luxury brands from jacking up their prices (yes they would do it more if they could get away with it!) and they remind us how little the actual bare components of most watches really cost and keep brands down to earth.
