Help me choose a Vostok

Hi all,

I'm wanting to grow my mediocre watch collection but I'm not currently in the market for anything pricey.

I've never owned a Vostok watch but I just wanted some recommendations, things to look out for, etc.

Cheers in advance,

I'd say a Scuba Dude Amphibia of your choice.

·

Of course Amfibia Zissou because that's what I'm wearing today 😎

Love it! Thats a pretty swanky strap!

Good luck in your search!

They're all pretty cool, I don't think you can go wrong.  Just be aware that you're buying a $100 automatic watch, so don't expect fancy.  They're more of the gritty Russian solution to the problem of depth than the slick Swiss solution.  But again, they're cool and still a great value at $100.

For what it's worth, I like these...

Get one without a date function because setting the date on these is a pain in the pitootties.  Try this site for a nice selection and great service.

Keep in mind that , no matter what you think , the crown is not broken!!

From everything I've read the crowns are a bit rough... Are they really that bad???😂

They have...character.  When you pull the crown out to set the time it wobbles around as if it were broken.  Other than that it's fine.

Buy it from anyone but a Russian. There are Ebay sellers from Ukraine so try to patronize one of them.

I like Scuba Dude

I think you need to select the case first, if you search Vostok cases you will find different sized cases of Vostok.

I'm probably going to say something already said above... But hell yeah! Get a #vostok! My budding collection:

My love of kitsch #russian nonsense is starting to take on a life of its own!

Reasons for getting into Vostok:

  1.  The engineering. Read up on how the #amphibia came about - how the deeper you dive the more water/pressure resistant it becomes. How the longer you wear a vostok the more accurate it gets, and how the wobbly crown is actually a well thought out solution to a pretty large engineering problem.
  2. Infinite modding and customisability. You'll see in my collection almost every piece has a new strap (let's be honest - the worst thing about Amphibia and #komandirski are the #bracelet), and various third party #bezel and inserts. Style your Vostok as you see fit.
  3. BONUS (I) these watches are terribly forgiving. Bash them around, they'll keep working. Scuff up the acrylic crystal - buff it out with some toothpaste! (Minty fresh!) They're built like the proverbial Russian tractor.
  4. BONUS (II) great learning tool. Because they are so forgiving, you can open up the back of an Amphibia and poke around with impunity. Everything I have learned about fixing watch movements has come from a few YouTube videos and disassembling/reassembling a vostok 2416b movement.
  5. BONUS (III) this is how I got into #vintage  watches. You can pick up a genuine Vostoks from the 70s and 80s for cents on the dollar and they are just dripping with history. check out my profile for more pics and rants about Vostok.

My latest acquisition came in the mail yesterday:

And there's a whole story behind that as well which I'll probably post later today.

Overall, do it. Get one. Just know it won't be your last. 😋

Thats a very nice collection you've got there!

The search is part of the fun!

Couldnt agree more! Its also the most addicting part...

if youre brave you can also try vintage Vostoks on Etsy. I got a couple and they were in really good condition.

The vintage ones are a bit smaller and tend to have 18mm lug width. Also most are mechanical not automatic.

Not as practically appealing but looks wise very interesting IMHO. This is mine:

Oddly classy for a Vostok... Love it

Scuba dooba dude!

I own two. One is based on a 710 case and the other on a 420. They both got upgraded with straps, signed crowns and new bezels and I prefer the 710, which surprisingly wears very much like a mini-turtle.

Image

They both have the same quirky movement, acrylic crystal and they are awesome in their rough Soviet area design and finish.

Bonus pic: Lume shot after 15 minutes.

Love that lume shot! hahaha

The price from the official factory store can't be beaten! Unfortunately, the current geopolitical situation rules it out for the most part if you are paying in anything other than Rubles. So much so, the 280683 I bought on the 27th of February, 2 days before everything kicked off, has been sitting in the UAE since March :-( .

My two previous purchases from the factory were the cheapest on the market and arrived in Australia in less than 10 days.

[I should have known better - I only bought the 280 because the Ruble had crashed to an all-time low at that point meaning it was literally less than half price, equivalent to about AUD$40 versus AUD$100 today. In that respect I am not too worried, and who knows, maybe it'll turn up one day!)

I had exactly the same thing happen with my Meranom order in March when the exchange rate was super low. Ordered a few bracelet upgrades for the Neptune and another Amphibia and the order got stuck in the UAE. Although the order never arrived, it was still worth a shot.

Because of course the average Russian watch seller is personally responsible for the Ukraine invasion. Sheesh!

The average Russian has little to no chance of exporting anything and stands a very good chance of getting sucked into the military before even getting paid for his watch. Russians in general are persona non grata everywhere now.

That's strap goes very well with the dial 👍

Amfibia scuba is a good one.

I bought a couple of them from this site. Not sure how delivery is like these days.

My favourite is the Amfibia Scuba. It is different, but in my collection it´s the most worn Vostok

·

This is my vostok that I've modded to death, they're cool to play with and you can always change the look if you get bored.

I love this thing. It’s a manual wind. Has the 8 o’clock date-setting trick. Yes, getting used to figuring out the feel of winding it is tricky, but it‘s worth it to me. $60 on Amazon.
