What's your opinion on the Doxa SUB 200?

Okay, another post, and this time it's with the Doxa SUB 200. But before that, I wanna get my opinion on the watch out of the way first.

I like it.

Yeah, anyone who is a Doxa fan might attack me for saying so (unless they know deeply of the brand's history), but hear me out.

I like it because it's a reissue of the original Doxa dive watch, the 11804-4, a nod to the beginning of Doxa dive watches, which interestingly, uses the same case as the 2nd gen Omega Seamaster 300 and Eberhard Scafograf 300 of the same era.

Regarding build quality, here's a Time+Tide owner's guide article about the watch, where the aforementioned build quality is addressed: https://timeandtidewatches.com/an-owners-guide-to-the-pros-and-cons-of-the-doxa-sub-200/

About lume, yeah, not as bright as the likes of Seiko, and somewhat disappointing as Doxa has a long pedigree in diving and dive watches, but this ain't a professional dive watch so not an issue for me.

As for the 19mm lug width, the original 11804-4 also has that same lug width, and so does many vintage watches of its time (I guess), so it's a rather lazy criticism. Yes, it's annoying, but vintage watches has all sort of odd lug widths back in their time so it's nothing new, and there's no shortage of third-party 19mm straps out there.

And for "it doesn't feel like a Doxa", they're kinda right, but also ignorant at the same time, as this is the reissue of the original Doxa dive watch, one that led to the SUB 300 and it's many variants.

So that's my opinion, tell me yours in the comment.

I made this post because I felt like it's the unloved child in the Doxa range even though it's the progenitor of Doxa dive watches and also because I'm intending on writing a BanG Dream! x Love Live! x South Park crossover fic about Poppin'Party's Saaya Yamabuki and Muse's Eli Ayase (the fic in question is a wedding fic, basically introducing Eli and Saaya as a married couple in the series, based on a fic I wrote at the tail end of 2022), and I wanted to have the Doxa SUB 200 Divingstar with the short rubber strap for Saaya (one more thing: as I said, the SUB 200 is the reissue of the 11804-4, using the same case as the 2nd gen Omega Seamaster 300, and Katrina Leskanich (the former Katrina and the Waves vocalist), one of the recurring characters in the series, owns the Helson Sharkmaster 300, the homage watch to the aforementioned Seamaster 300, with the black Big Triangle dial), hence this post.

Here's two WatchUSeek posts about the 11804-4 and the SUB 200:

https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/doxa-sharkhunter-11804.4079562/

https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/sub-200-doxa%E2%80%99s-unloved-child.5196363/

And here's the video from Andrei, who runs the YouTube channel Brave Beaters, about the SUB 200 with the black Sharkhunter dial, and another vid with the Aquamarine dial version, which would fit South Park's Randy Marsh quite well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UAmbBcBc4w

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exvEPXO35lU

And one last thing, here's the aforementioned Eli and Saaya wedding fic I wrote at the end of 2022 (note: it's BanG Dream! x Love Live! with Eurovision but without South Park): https://archiveofourown.org/works/43888167

Excellent watch for what it is, but too much Phineas Flynn going on, IMHO! 😇 A DOXA-signed crown and clasp and a Sailboat on the back would have been lovely. 😁

Yeah, I understand that not everyone will know about what I said. Also, I like Phineas and Ferb as well!

Edit: what do you mean by "too much Phineas Flynn going on", the post, or the color options? Also, I'm primarily a fan of BanG Dream!, Love Live!, South Park, and the Eurovision Song Contest.

Big fan of these. Ultimately I went for an SPB143 for a similar price, but I do keep looking at these particularly in Aquamarine, as a summer/holiday watch.

Regarding the DOXA-signed crown, I agree, as the original 11804-4 do have the DOXA-signed crown. The caseback on the original, on the other hand, does not have a sailboat, though I also agree with that as well as the sailboat is probably the logo of DOXA I think.

Here's the Analog:Shift listing for the 11804-4: https://www.analogshift.com/products/doxa-eberhard-case-sharkhunter-as01823

It's a good looking watch But I would get a 300 or 300t if I were to get a Doxa.

It like being rich and handsome but your brother is ever more rich and handsome. You are still rich and handsome. You will still get some, but you brother will be first pick for most 😅

What about the 600T? Does the same situation applies?

I am not a fan of the Jenny fish symbol, but as always, horses for courses! 🤓🐟🤷🏽‍♂️

Looks nice, I guess.

Oh, I get what you mean, but could you explain further about that? I'm also not a fan of the Jenny fish symbol as well.

Have been eyeing the Whitepearl as my summer watch, but summer is slowly coming to an end!!!😭 (I'm in the southern hemisphere)

I have the Shark Hunter and really like it. Keeps good time, looks good, the beads of rice bracelet is very comfortable and breathable when it's 105. The criticisms you already mentioned are valid but I knew about them going in and decided I could live with them because I have other watches with lume and 20mm, which I do wish it had more than anything. I love the clean dial, just the brand and model. The clasp should be better for the money. I'm apathetic about the Jenny Fish logo but get why it would put people off. The criticisms of it not looking like a Doxa are ignorant I agree given the history, and Doxa didn't start as a dive watch brand. I thought about a 300 but it isn't an everyday watch for my place in life so I bought the 200, for me it toes a line better and I can wear it anywhere.

Not sure if you know but the bezel is 40mm, the case is 42 but between the bezel and the lug-to-lug of just 46mm it truly wears like a 40mm which I am a fan of. Overall I like it and it's a keeper in my collection.

In my opinion, yes. But they too are really cool watches!! Like the look a lot, but it's not what comes to mind when someone says Doxa?

Same with the Army? (Both the black ceramic Watches of Switzerland limited edition version and the production stainless steel version)

Yes. 300 is the famous brother who stands to inherit the family wealth. 600T is the brother who had to go join the military to find his own success. When I was shopping for a dive watch, I loved the look of 600T and bought that one instead. Doesn’t have the “Doxa” look, but I figured no one knows what a Doxa is anyway. 😁

I think the 600T is more of the late 1970s-early 1980s Doxa.

I recently purchased 3 Doxa Sub 200s. 2 were gifts for my Dad (Sharkhunter) and brother (Caribbean). I went with the Aquamarine just to keep each watch in the set unique. We are all very pleased.

The movement isn't anything to write home about but I love that in a Diver's watch, it's reliable and affordable to service, exactly what a dive watch should be.

All 3 are on the BoR bracelet which is comfortable and looks great. Don't pay attention to gripes about the diver extension, I don't even notice it and am a believer that with the exception of the Pelagos spring system, diver extensions are mostly laughable gimmicks.

I'm not a huge fan of Fauxtina but the Sharkhunter and Caribbean wear it pretty well. The Aquamarine was a way to throw a splash of fun color into the collection and makes an excellent summer watch that dresses up nicely on the bracelet.

The 19mm lug width is a non issue. Plenty of cheap good options out there on the internets. The aquamarine looks great on a canvas or rubber Barton strap. The factory aquamarine strap was way too showy for my taste.

The lume as stated before isn't great but it is slightly better on the Aquamarine than the other two.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. It's a great way to get into a Doxa and a vintage inspired dive watch.

If you want to stick at the same price point but get something resembling most of the Doxa dive watches, check out the new Synchron watches. Specifically the Poseidon model intrigues me since Poseidon is a legitimate scuba gear company although I havent done my homework yet on the current state of Synchron. (Time to open the can of worms on Doxa/Jenny/Synchron!!!)

·

I'm a sucker for DOXAs, although I haven't bought a current model in about 10 years. The 200 and 600 are nice, and I've strongly considered both, but I "need" the cushion case of the 300/old 600/750/1000/1200.

·

It looks great from the top, but the protruding domed crystal would be a deal-breaker for me. I usually prefer case designs which feature a protected crystal.

Not many pics online show the watch form the side. Here'a pic from https://wornandwound.com/review/review-doxa-sub-200/

Can you list an example of case designs with protected crystal?

I have a Seiko King Samurai and a Tissot Gentleman. I tend to go for watches that have flat crystals which are flush or below the bezel. I've put some nasty scratches on crystals in the past, so it makes me feel better when they don't stick way out. The Seiko Monster has a VERY protected crystal :)

What about bezels above crystal and sloped down bezel above crystal? (i.e. Bertuccis, Casio G-Shocks, the Rado Captain Cook, and the Breitling Superocean 57)

Yes, those all have pretty good protection :) I like that Captain Cook.

Nice picture! Hope you share a picture of that 300T as soon as you get it.

Also, I'm a fanfic writer on the Archive of Our Own website, and I'm the author of the BanG Dream! x Love Live! x South Park series, and in that series, Roselia's lead vocalist and Nijigaku member Yukina Minato owns a Sub 300T Sharkhunter (side note: Yukina's wife (at least in my series) and fellow member of both Roselia and Nijigaku, Nana Nakagawa (stage name Setsuna Yuki) owns a Ollech & Wajs C-1000. Also, if Kenny McCormick and Butters Stotch were going to appear in a fic I wrote, they would be owning the Sub 300T Professional and Aquamarine, respectively.)

Edit: scratch the whole Butters having the Doxa Sub 300T Aquamarine, it's the black and turquoise Aquadive Bathysphere 100 GMT for him now.

Another edit: forget what I previously said above, Butters will have the Sub 300T Aquamarine if he appears in my fics.

@ChronoGuy how and where did you score your Sub200 for $500?! First of all, congrats and second, I AM JEALOUS!

I lucked into it. PurchaseDirect could not fulfill an eBay order for the silver dial Jenny Caribbean I had won. So they offered me the Doxa for the same price. That was the easiest decision I’ve ever made.

I really like my Sub 200 Shark Hunter. 42mm wears like a 40mm, lume fine for me, love the crystal, dial and the BoR bracelet. The clasp is fully functional but I miss on the fly adjustment. Running at about +12s/day which I find acceptable but a bit disappointing. The divers extension is poor quality but it’s not an issue to me as I’ll never use it.
