Vintage collectors advice/help
To date, I have not ventured into the world of vintage watches. I didn’t really have any interest and it is a world I know basically nothing about. Recently, while looking for some home furnishings now that we are nearing the end of some remodeling at our house, my partner and I have been getting into auctions more and more. Mostly online but will be venturing into in person soon.
Some of the auctions we are tracking include "lots" of watches from different estates. The Vacheron pictured is a recent example. When wanting to check the authenticity (assuming the auction house won’t do it) where does one even begin?
Are there reputable sites that can help and list the back catalogues of certain manufactures? Should I be looking elsewhere? Should I only go to auction houses that authenticate all of their items? Should I just recognize that I know nothing about this world and stay out of it?
How does one even begin?
Somewhat new to the collecting community, but pretty far down the rabbit hole already…
A good watchmaker would be able to make an assessment? A VC- retailer might do better? Could combine with a service?

Err, yeah, that looks sketch as hell. That ain't no holy trinity high horology.
My strategy has been to look for simple complications from, for me, known brands. Initially only from dealers with some sort of a track record. Last years I dared to buy from private sellers on C24. That has also worked fine but is always a bit nervous, or exited to be more positive, since you don’t have the automatic right to return the watch.
I seriously doubt that VC would used a plated case instead of actual gold...
