Seiko alpinist Prospex vs Hamilton khaki

Being in the same price range, which of the two would you choose as a field watch?

I would go with the S Alpinist. I Just love how that hole dial looks

·

The Hamilton. With the Hammy you're getting a monumental power reserve of 80 hours with the same 21600 A/h frequency as the 6R35. Plus, the Powermatic 80 now usually comes in standard with the Nivachron antimagnetic hairspring. The Khaki Field also has a cleaner, more versatile design.

TBH, Seiko isn't good bang for the buck any longer, and QC issues are notorious.

·

specs-wise you get more for your money with the Hamilton. I tried both and the Hamilton with its flatter profile did fit my 6,5" wrist better.

However...I would still go with the Alpinist as I prefer the looks. The dial on the khaki is a bit too busy. Without the 24 hours indicators the khaki would be my favorite.

Think I would go with the seiko but would have to change the bracelet to a nato or something as I have lost x2 seikos due to bracelet issues, however, I do have a Hamilton khaki field and do love it

Realistically - about 7 vintage watches you’ve never heard of, and a couple even with a pin-pallet movement for good measure.

otherwise, Hamilton Khaki - I just do classic field, and whilst I prefer UK field, US ones are sweet in their own way. I haven‘t boarded the Seiko train, and the Alpinist is twice the price it was a few years ago but is not twice the watch. Plus Seiko are taking the piss out of you all now with their failing QC.

Oh!  Pin-pallet movement???  Tell me more!!!

·

Alpinist for me!

·

Hamilton all day, more watch for your money. I had an alpinist and strange for a seiko I found it uncomfortable also not worth the price.

·

I actually ordered both last month - and returned the Seiko.

The Hamilton just connected with me more. Both were very good - if I had the Seiko with nothing to compare it against I would have happily kept it, but with both in hand (which I would suggest you try if possible) the Hamilton won me over!

·

I have both , and love them both . it's the Hamilton that gets more time on the wrist , as it is a bit inconspicuous at work. Alpinist becomes more dressier of the two

The hip bone is connected to the thigh bone

The thigh bone is connected to… a structurally unsound connection designed to wear down over time due to friction

·

Alpinist for me

·

even as a complete seiko nerd the 80 hr power reserve on the Hammy is pretty cool and if you wanted a strait up black dial and a real field watch look you go with the Hamilton.. IF you go for the sarb get that greeeeeeen dial ;) and pray you get one with everything in check qc wise (buy in person if possible)

·

Sounds to me like you're just looking to stir up some trouble.

·

Seiko. It looks a million dollars next to the Hamilton. If you'd handled both of them you probably wouldn't even be asking.

·

I agree with Watchme1… the Hamilton is a field watch, the 24 hour dial puts me off, but they are a well made watch. The Alpinist is a totally different watch, the Sarb017 is a class act, I have one and it’s a certain keeper, if you can get one in good condition……a great buy……unfortunately the newer issue have the awful “X” prospex logo which in my opinion ruins it.

Both great watches in my opinion but I would take the Hamilton without hesitation..

Seiko having increased their price point for the Alpinist collection, the price difference with brands from the Swatch Group (ergo Hamilton) is slim; however, QC with Seiko is really an issue: out of 4 Alpinist I bought, 2 had faulty movements where the timegrapher was showing ... sinusoids ! beat error is also often > 1ms, amplitude was super weak (often around 200° instead of the 230-250 range to expect on Japanese movements).

In comparison, all Hamiltons I bought (a Jazzmaster, a Khaki field automatic, and the Murph) could have been certified COSC: within the -3/+5spd, amplitude of 300° minimum, beat error < 0.4ms.

Also, Hamilton uses free sprung movements, which means these figures should not vary much, even in case of a shock (fingers crossed it doesn't happen !).

So, my take is : for the dial looks, Seiko is a great choice, but if you want both accuracy and precision, go for Hamilton.

·

What can I say except I'm a big fan of both brands, having them both in the collection at one point, the Seiko went and the Hamilton stayed. So if I had to choose again it would still be the Hamilton all day 💯

Alpinist. Are they really in the same price range today? Alpinists seem to have become overpriced.

·

Alpinist, brotha. Power reserve is comparable…70 vs 80…its Just a more visually stimulating piece. And it has a compass.

if I had a dollar for every time that thing has guided me to my destination…I’d have zero dollars.  Still cool.

Truly do appreciate the Khaki field. It’s legendary. A smidge boring, legendary nonetheless. Go for seiko.

why so you say that? lol

·

I don't own a Khaki but I did receive a Hamilton winder for my birthday. I was eyeing the new blue dial Titanium Khaki when I was given my winder. Not a Nato guy so that was changed.  Love the watch! Everything else I own is automatic. This is a fun change!
