Thoughts on negative display digitals?

I bought this A168WGG before F91W and A158WA. Before getting it in hand, I thought it looked really cool with the negative display and all-black anodised body. Sure, it does but eventually, I realised how hard these displays are to read the time.

I've seen people wearing mechanical watches upside down to admire the clear case back, that's cool. But I like my watches to tell the time also, apart from their appeal. Because of that, the 168 gets quite less wrist time compared to the 158.

Do you own any negative display digitalis? Will you ever own one? Or what are your thoughts in general about these displays?

Edit

I wore this one mostly in the evenings and never on a bright sunny day. Turns out, it's the lack of light that makes it hard to read but the sun makes it clear!

I too like the aesthetic. Is it really that difficult to read?

·

I’ve got 1 G-Shock with this display type.

I’ve got to admit that I’ve never noticed it being hard to read.

Yeah, a little bit of sun and a slight off-angle, and it's gone!

From the photos, it seems that way but this time I will be sure to try hands-on a negative display gshock before purchasing online.

You are right, sir! Thanks :)

I do like the aesthetics of a negative display, but I find them harder to read as I get older. They are also more difficult to read in bright light unless I am looking directly down at the face.

·

I have this model too and love it!

@mhiggi02 I was wrong about the sun part, have a look

Hey thanks. That does look very legible. I may have to go in after all!

I got a few negative display g shocks, fine to read for me. But nowadays I'm really trying to hold our for positive display watches. This one looks great in sun as you mention

Nice bracelet you got there.

I think any digital Casio with a big enough screen looks really rad with a negative display, and so does yours! I have 2 calculator models (53WF-4B) and they're so hard to read. I already ordered a few thingamajigs to mod the screens myself...Fingers crossed.

·

Casio for sure really pull off the negative display really good. There some watches that looks good and others a bit hard to see. but overall I like it.

I love the CA53WF, will buy one someday. But you're right, one line negative displays are hard to read, especially in low light, I've seen it on the new variant of A100 hands-on.

Good luck with the mod, do share the results with us :)

That's true. They've done a great job with the vintage and youth series.

I definitely will! If it comes out alright, I’ll make that my first post.

I came across a few people that they can't stand Casio. I'm sorry I stand behind Casio 110% just look at the variety, style from vintage to G shocks. Not saying they the best but for most overall is a must have.

I have a negative display GShock and haven't worn it in ages because I always have trouble reading it. Never again.

·

I have several digital display casios and a timex explorer. They all have positive displays. I do like the look of the negative displays but I tried a friends and found it to be not all legible?

Yeah, it depends on the ambient light very much. Also, the viewing angles are bad compared to their positive display alternatives, no matter how much ambient light is present.

Ha it does! I don't wear it that much, it's more of a nostalgia piece. The bracelet is aftermarket from Amazon, but it works.

I’m not a fan of the negative display, for me it makes it more difficult to read the time.  It looks cool yes, but for me it isn’t practical

Hi there.
I have a few Casio negative displays and I find solar powered TN-LCD (twisted nematic) displays hard to read. In saying that though, non solar powered negatives are a bit easier to read. Don’t be fooled by the advertising pics for solar negatives which make them look bright.

Casio also produce negative display watches with STN-LCD (super twisted nematic) which gives a much better contrast (even on solar powered watches) and is so much easier to read in lower light. These are generally found on the more expensive G-Shocks but to my mind, are worth the $/£/€… The viewing angles on these, at least to me, are excellent.

The best negatives - again re Casios, are MIP (memory in pixel) displays. You can obtain these on Casio‘s ‘smart’ / sport or surfing watches (GBD-100/200, GBX-100 or the super heavyweight monster GPR-B1000). Absolutely no problem with viewing angles on this one in any lighting conditions.

With every good wish,

Nick
