What do you wear to a watch fair/meetup.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, likely heading to Windup and the meet-up Friday. The big question, what do you wear? My initial logic:

  • Leave Rolex, Omega, Tudor, etc at home. Everyone has seen them, many seemingly have them, so less likely to inspire discussion.
  • The micro. Do you wear something from one of the brands there? Or try to find another micro that may not be represented?
  • The vintage. I cannot help this category. My oldest watch is from 03.
  • The quirky. The GS others likely have not seen in person? Perhaps the odd limited edition.

At this point, I am leaning Monta, GS, or GO. If you are going, or were to attend which piece of yours would you wear?

Side note, which brand of those attending would you want to see?

I think this would look nice on you...

I really wish I lived close enough to attend meetups like this.

I agree that unless you have something fairly unique and interesting from the major brands, it's probably best to choose something that is going to be much less commonplace. My collection is pretty mainstream, but I did recently win the @HotWatchChick69 charity auction for the Phantasos Triclops, so I'd probably wear that.

The brands I'd be most interesting in seeing would be Studio Underd0g and anAordain. I ordered a Desert Sky from Studio Underd0g during the latest order window, but won't be receiving it until March or April 2023, and have never seen one in person yet. I'd also love a chance to see the anOrdain dials in person.

Have fun at the show.

Nice pick!  I am looking forward to seeing an SU in person.

If you are looking for attention put on a MVMT watch. Definitely a discussion starter at such events 🤣

·

Thought about it but unfortunately I cannot come to the meet up!! would be so much fun to meet you bunch of nerds!! but which watch I thought I would wear my citizen since hardly no one talks about it and as much as I love Seiko my citizen mechanical watch doesn’t get too much ❤️…

I’ll prbly wear these two…

left…and right 😉

I would always go quirky/something that would interest even a jaded old watch nerd.

·

I’d probably wear my birth year (1977) Seiko Bullhead (pictured), as like you say, it’s a bit different and a good conversation starter. Of the brands there, I’d love to try on the new orange and grey anniversary from Autodromo, and some funky coloured Farers. I own watches from both brands, but wouldn’t want to show favouritism! have you decided what to wear?

I was originally going but sadly my son has been Ill…darn kids ..

I have another idea. You don't wear a watch at all and if anyone asks you tell that it is the only-in-the-world invisible watch. You can also boast its phenomenal antireflective coating but mention that the legibility could be better.

·

I wore my Oris Big Crown Pointer Date to Windup Chicago because they were a sponsor of the show. I wanted to show my appreciation and let them know how much I love the watch. I left my Omega at home. I felt the same way you did.

This idea has merit because I guarantee you walk out of the show with a new watch. I did.

Sounds like a trap 🪤. Isn't it? 🤣

When I went to the WindUp Watch Fair in SF earlier this year, I wore my Seagull 1963.

you could go under the radar with your Serica 4512, then see who notices for funsies.

I think I would wear a nerdy watch like one of my cooler Casioaks or something unique like one of my vintage Vostoks.

Good call, easily mistaken for a number of other watches.

·

Nothing but a smile…

That will turn some heads.

·

I had recently gotten my Brew before the wind up in SF so that’s what I wore. I got to thank the guys at Brew for their work and it certainly got more compliments that day than every other day combined.
I think the sentiment of showing appreciation to the maker is something I try for. I always appreciate when someone enjoys something I made.

·

Quirk the crap out of your watch choice!!!  And I'd consider double wristing, to show my sparkle variety to new friends.  And to look more dorky.

Is that whole list of potentials ... all watches in your little / massive collection??!! 😮

Hate all you bums that get to go... but looking forward to some hilarious pics!

·

Wear an Apple Watch! Functional and controversial.

·

Great!  All of you have given me reasons to buy a microbrand.

·

If you’re at the fair today and see someone wearing the latest NOMOS x Fratello Weltzeit LE, say hi to me!

·

I’ll be in a maroon cap.

·

Oh baby…I’m wearing my Apple Watch!

·

In theory yes, but when going to a watch meet-up having something not everyone has seen, or will see that day, is a nice to have for discussions.

·

You could go straight for an attention grabber:

Less eccentric would be a not-quite so attention-grabbing dress watch (as these are often neglected in such circles) that nevertheless manages to stand out.

Or perhaps a tool watch that does neatly fit a into a genre:

I think this may be true for some people some times I think "just wear what you want forget others" is actually pretty poor advice for the poster in this context.

He is going to a watch event where he will meet other watch folk, they will most likely ask what he's wearing and he wants something likely to inspire a followup conversation.  Given that's the aim not caring what the response to your watch you be is a rookie error.

So to answer the poster.

1. Nothing to generic - like you I'd avoid the watches everyone already knows.

2. After that - pick a watch you have a great story to follow up with, the story is the key then, not the watch.

Wear and share your entire watch collection on you. And maybe you might win a grand prize. A  fake Rolex.🤣
