Micro Tournament Round 1 Day 5: Jack Mason Vs. Melbourne Watch Company

Rules: • Voting is based on the overall brand, not the individual model or sample photo. • There are no rules on how you should choose, but you are welcome to civilly debate quality, value, heritage, etc. • Voters are encouraged to look at the hashtags for threads on individual brands or visit their sites. • Poll closes apx 11PM ET 3/18. • Be respectful of all the brands and members, even if the vote does not go your way. This is meant to be lighthearted fun to raise awareness of 64 microbrands. • Ties will go to the brand with the most unique user-owned photos of their watch on this thread. Good luck and have fun! All posts and results will be tracked under #microtournament

I am intrigued by what Jack Mason is doing, but I have to go with the company I've actually spent my money on:

First match where I don't have a strong interest from either brand 😅 I voted MWC because of the picture from @DukeMo, really nice bezel!

·

This will be the tightest one yet.

Absolutely stunning, there is something so simplistic about this design, it obviously takes inspiration from a sub but is different in every way, I love the textured dial, this is a very special piece.

Again, no experience of either. Looking at pics though, Melbourne just doesn't interest me at all, while I do find some of the JMs interesting, but I wouldn't consider buying either.

Knowing that the first WC collaboration with a brand would be with JM (see @Max post from I don’t know when), I would be sad to see them go on the first round. That said, beyond their killer Strat-o-timer, I have not seen much else from them…

I cannot wait for that Collab!

Jack Mason has some terrible ads and not a lot of originality. Melbourne Watch Co slightly more original. They sell a pretty affordable triple calendar which Jack Mason don't, I believe.

·

You didn't make this easy. I adore the Melbourne Carlton Chrono but Jack Mason has an answer for that with the Moto Racing Chrono and it's $80.00 less. I voted Jack!

Blame the excel match-making algorithm. This result may be the first surprise for me so far in this tournament.

"Blame the algorithm not me" is becoming the go to WatchCrunch excuse for everything. I'm going to try it out on my wife. Sorry about dropping 10 grand on that Zenith, I was confused by the algorithm.

That is funny, but the amex algorithm said so. I am not sure excel is an algorithm as much as doing it’s job with the randomizer function.

·

It's all good but it randomly paired some brands that took a lot of consideration.

·

Poll closed for this matchup. Congratulations to Melbourne Watch Company.

Never heard of half of those micros in this tournament. Damn, i thought i investigated the Microbrands quite well, but i guess they pop up out of nowhere. Which is phantastique.

Gotta love their aviator chronograph. Too big for my wrist though.

JM is definitely worth seeing in person. I saw the Strat-o-timer at Windup last year and can't wait to receive it soon. The founders joined the WC meet-up - great people who are passionate about watches, and you can see that in the design details.

I have a couple of JM solars and a discontinued world timer - they are great and wear well. You can pick up a solar for half price - it's a steal at $145 - or even try before you buy (not sure if it works internationally). I'm not a shill for JM, just very happy with the brand.

Sorry I missed the poll. I would have gone with Melbourne Watch Company as it's my now home town, and I personaly own a Lonsdale. It's a nice watch, and cheaper than most of Jacks offerings. Also not a huge fan of most of Jack Masons styles although I quite like the Canton day date, but at $613 is probably 30% more expensive than the Lonsdale. Not sure if the movement is any better?
