Torn between 2

I'm a sports watch & bracelet kind of guy, but this year I've had a crazy obsession with German style deck watches.

Since around me, it's hard to try these things on I've done my share of research and watched many hours of YouTube reviews. I'm coming here maybe to see if I can get some real life experiences from "real" people who own one of these brands.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my post!

Yeah, I have a Limited Edition Whatawatches x Stowa Marine Midnight Seoul Edition. It's essentially a Stowa Marine Classic in 36mm. I personally like a marine chronometer with a small seconds. Although, they can be had with central seconds, also. I just find a small seconds makes the overall dial more interesting.

You don't have to go limited edition like the one I have. They only made 100. Not sure if completely sold out yet?

With Stowa, you're getting a great German brand. And, if you order from their website, they are made to order so you can spec out the level of customization you want, the price will be higher, of course, the more fancier you make it. They have both small seconds and central seconds, 36mm, 41mm... Maybe some other sizes. Arabic and Roman numerals. Even can specify automatic or manual wind movement and maybe grade of movement, too.

I've experience with Hamilton Khaki Navy Pioneer with the small seconds, of course. And, I've owned both the blue and white dial versions. It's a great watch. 40mm. Quite thin at maybe 10mm or so if I recall correctly. Cool (faux) wire lugs, you can actually do strap changes easily as it does use springbars. Unique case design as well as maybe one of the more original dial design that isnt so similar as most other brands tend to do. Gives me a bit of A. Lange & Sohne vibes, especially if it had alpha hands instead of the traditional spade type. Even some slight FP Journe look too, especially the blue version I had, just the type of blue used and the way the number style has a similar look to what FPJ uses.

Hamilton is well priced, especially if get from grey market. And, they also have a central seconds version if you prefer that.

There are no shortage or marine chronometer style watches. Price ranges can vary from inexpensive to white expensive. But, for your basic marine chronometer design, you won't find that much difference between most brands in the overall style and appearance.

That being said, you may want to figure out the size you want. These typically have not much bezel and large dial relatively speaking. So, they tend to wear larger than said specs.

I have a 6.875" wrist and I like the 36mm I have. But, I could probably do 40mm or 41mm.. but, bit sure I want that large of wrist presence. Also, the lug to lug on the larger sizes might be a little more than I want, especially if they may not have good downturn on the lugs. Idk? I felt good with my Stowa at 36mm.

Dekla makes a decent deck watch in 2 sizes. I think 39mm or 40mm and a 42mm or 43mm.. I forget exactly but you get the general 2 sizes. And, they can be customized as well in many ways. I suggest you check out the website to see full options. They are German brand and German Made, also.

I almost went with Dekla. I held back cause all the photos I saw on people's wrist made it look too big. Either they were very skinny wristed folks. And/or they actually had the larger 42mm version which didn't help, IMHO. Lastly, the bottom of dial reads Made in Germany in German. BUT, I don't like that line of text omits the minute markings between 25-35 minutes. Thus, reading and setting the time within this minute range is very difficult at best. I think if you have custom made from Dekla, you may request not to have that line of text at the bottom so you get the minute markings back. But, I like to have Made in German on the dial so that wouldn't work for me. I don't have that problem with Stowa as Made in Germany is printed above the markings so I have it all there.

Laco makes some marine chronometer styles. Also, another German brand. Steinhart also has some, but they tend to be at least 42mm, if not larger.

Oh, and check out Archimede. Pretty sure they have marine chronometer style watches and also another German brand.
