Big Birthday Coming up - help me choose my present.

Evening Crunchers: got a milestone birthday coming up and to mark it I am going to get a special watch. Shortlist has been narrowed down to two. (Disclaimer: people's opinion on the internet probably won't sway my choice - but I am interested in hearing opinions.)

What are you leaning towards? The Omega is an icon, but everywhere. It is always awesome to see a Milgauss in the wild, definitely will stand out more. No wrong choice.

Yeah, definitely leaning towards the Milgauss for the very reason you mention.

You can’t go wrong with any of the two. Great classics both of them. Maybe the Milgauss has a head up if it should serve as a dress watch as well.

I was hoping you'd comment. You have both, I believe.

I chose Moonwatch because I think there are much nicer Rolex models than the Milgauss (imo), but Omega doesn’t offer anything more iconic than that Speedy.
As you’re marking a significant  occasion, a watch which represents a significant occasion makes sense. Even if the two aren’t related 😅

I have both but I have the blue Milgauss. I read that the green glass is more prominent on the black version.

I pick the Rolex ,only problem is the wait list so get your name down ASAP

Ah now you see, that's interesting. Definitely the Speedy is the most iconic Omega but I think the Milgauss is the most quirky (interesting?) model that Rolex makes. And whilst it hasn't been to the moon, it does have its own interesting history (CERN).

To hit the date I may have to go grey market.... 🤑

·

If your wrist size can take it, Speedmaster everyday all year.

·

Depends on how far your  date is away I'd still go on the list ,last resort grey market

In fairness, I have never held either one of these in my hands, and am open to the idea that doing so would dramatically change my horological worldview. Given that, the Speedy feels like something I’m constantly being told to worship (like the Hamilton Khaki Field), yet looking at it does nothing for me. The Milgauss is the only Rolex that speaks to me at all, although in my case it’s the blue one.

And as much as I care at all about being noticed, I’m always happier when my car/watch/whatever is kind of a “sleeper“ that’s not attention-grabbing, but will lead to conversations with like-minded cognoscenti. I think the Milgauss fits that bill too.

In any event, you can‘t lose with these two finalists. Enjoy your eventual pick and happy birthday in advance!

You, sir, just nailed (and perhaps cemented) my opinion. Thank you.

Glad I could help. Look forward to seeing pics!

Please send the losing watch to my PO Box. I promise to give it a good home (by selling it and buying a GS White Birch SLGA009 and a Longines Ultra Chron. I have birthdays  too, ya know 😀!).

Don't mention the SLGA009 please. That was third on the list but I have other Grand Seiko's and I'm trying to break that addiction. But...but....that dial.......

I retract my thank you and replace it with a curse you.

Milgauss is a special watch. Between the green sapphire crystal, lightning bolt seconds hand, and sharp down turned lugs, there‘s nothing like it

·

I know what watch I picked. But what is a milestone birthday? 30, 40, 50, 60, 70.....

Cheers!

·

Choose what speaks to you.

·

Milguass is gonna be my pick. I think it is a very underrated and unconventional Rolex to own, and the dial looks pretty cool and distinct, especially the lightning-shaped seconds hand. Not to mention, the Milgauss is made to "honor science", and I am a student who is gonna major in science.

·

The Milgauss has the more interesting and distinctive dial but in all fairness I would not buy either if it was to celebrate an event, unless the point is to show that what I really want to accomplish in my life is to be like all the other who bought a Rolex or a Speedmaster.

·

Speedmaster. I'm an Omega fanboy & don't allow Rolex to cast a shadow in my collection.

·

Be unique, Get The Milgauss.

·

But are strong choices. Whilst what I would actually do is get an Explorer - of the two I’d go for the speedy. The bracelet much nicer.

I've been informed by several ADs that the black dial hasn't been in stores for a long time. If they ever get a Milgauss, it's always the blue one.

·

Definitely the Milgauss for me. I don't like chronographs and I love the funkyness of the green glass. I also would consider the white dial if you do on the grey market. I'm torn between the two!

I think the Milgauss is the best example of the “Emperor’s New Clothes Effect” of having Rolex on the dial.

This is a childish watch - the coloured crystal, gaudy indices and silly ‘lightning bolt’ seconds hand. It’s as if the designers were given the brief to ”make it look Scifi, because scientists and engineers love that!”

If this watch had “TAG“ on the dial, we‘d be mocking it mercilessly.

Not that many years ago, Rolex ADs couldn’t give these things away.  But as all things Rolex have become less and less attainable, leaving only the obscure models even remotely achievable by Rolex fans, we slowly see more and more people claiming that the Milgauss is their favourite Rolex model; and the one they really really wanted all along.

·

I am not a fan of the Speedy, so this was an easy choice for me 😆

Happy hunting and happy early birthday!!

·

From these two options, I'd choose the Milgauss (assuming I could actually get one).

Firstly, it's a simpler watch, great for everyday wear, with an automatic movement.

Secondly, although it's very simple, it's also very distinctive with a lot of personality. You see far fewer of them around, but they always stand out.

·

It's kind of interesting that the Speedy is winning in the polls whilst the Milgauss is winning in the comments.

Went to the AD's today - tried on both hesalite and sapphire Speedy - something I have done before and whilst I respect and admire the watch massively - it didn't sing to me.

Popped into Watches of Switzerland to get on the list for the Milgauss to be told that the list is closed for that model. AD said it was the first Rolex model they knew of where the list was closed - sounds to me that the long-rumoured discontinuation may be approaching.

Have found one on the grey market at a price that was acceptable to me - picking up next week. If it is about to be discontinued it could turn into the first ever shrewd watch investment I have ever made (not that I care about such things).

·

Thread closure. Happy birthday to me.
