A Grail Landed - A Cult Joined - Grand Seiko Skyflake
"Lets make it official!" I am now part of the Grand Seiko cult, culture and community. Today I was able to land one of my Grail Watches from a local AD. Behold the SBGA407 or Blue "Skyflake."
Last Friday I paid a visit to one of the local ADs in my area, but for a non-watch related inquiry. I was actually looking at jewelry for my wife and our upcoming anniversary this fall. (For context, I live in a smaller metro area, maybe 600K people. There are not many Watch Stores or ADs besides your typical mall jewelers pushing the ever-trendy fashion watches.) This AD is one of 2-3 in my area. He carries Rolex, Tudor and to my surprise just brought on Grand Seiko within the last month.
I did my best to stay focused on the task at hand but the dials and zaratsu were not making it easy. I was able to complete my mission (Wife's jewelry) and exit without even asking to try one on, BUT not without noticing the SBGA407 sitting there staring me down waiting for me. I don't know though, it just did not seem right to turn that particular trip into something for me, when it was all planned for her. So, I left.
And then I spent the next 3 days reading, researching and watching the reviews (all which I had seen before). I made it until Sunday night before I emailed the AD and said I would like to swing back in and check out some of the Grand Seikos.
Today, I did not resist temptation and my eyes were glued to his case full of beauties! I thought "if I was going to make this purchase, I had to be sure this was the one for me." Afterall this was my first time seeing it in person. So, I tried on a number of different models...the SBGE269 GMT, SBGW277 (crazy he had one), SBGA465, SBGA413 Cherry Blosom and SBGA211. In the end I kept coming back to the Skyflake. I have lusted over it since 2020 and although each of the other models were simply fantastic, this was the one for me. And that's all she wrote. A Grail Watch landed!
I would apologize for the lengthy story and rambling, but I don't care. This one is and always will be special!

The Skyflake was my entry drug into this world and it’s one I still wear quite regularly. None of my other watches shine or pull attention in the same way. Also, it looks amazing on different straps and on the bracelet!

The blue and brown ones in my photos are actually from Strapcode. I love them, super comfortable and a great fit for the odd 19mm lug width of many grand Seikos.

Thank you! If you can get hands on with them, do it. No one really says this, but pictures and videos just do not tell the whole story. 😂 JK, everyone says it. But really, these watches are something else in person. So so great.
